Previewing Miami quarterback commit Judd Anderson’s senior season: ‘His upside is through the freaking roof’

Gray (Ga.) Jones County head coach Mike Chastain has seen plenty of future Power Five quarterbacks over the years, including former Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm, but 2024 Miami commit Judd Anderson sticks out in his own way.

Chastain saw Anderson take substantial leaps last season in his first year at Jones County last season, which also marked his first year in a spread offense after running a wing-T power-run scheme at his previous school. Anderson played particularly well in his state’s 7-on-7 scene this summer in competitions at Auburn and Georgia and flashed the upside Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson saw, completing around 70% of his passing attempts.

“I think the biggest thing (going into Anderson’s senior year) is to just keep getting better,” Chastain said. “His upside is through the freaking roof. He is very talented, he’s got all of the tools. He transferred here at the end of his sophomore year where he was in a wing-T offense, and he’s only been throwing the ball around in a more modern spread offense for a little over a year now, but he’s made leaps and bounds so far to get to this point.”

Anderson has already impressed those around him, who are convinced Miami has landed a winner in the three-star, 6-foot-6, 217-pound gunslinger, but Chastain expects him to continue to improve with additional reps and experience at quarterback this season. Jones County scrimmaged Buford, the No. 1 ranked team in the country with more than half of its defense receiving offers to Georgia and Alabama, earlier this month, and Chastain felt Anderson played as well as he could given the pass rush he faced.

Anderson completed around 50% of his throws while under serious duress from the Buford defense and in limited snaps. Chastain said he wanted 5A Jones County to scrimmage 7A Buford to challenge the team early and learn what needed to be cleaned up.

So what does Anderson need to continue to do going into his senior year?

“Just continue to lead,” Chastain said. “He’s a really positive person, really encouraging person no matter if it’s younger guys playing or older guys playing, whatever. He has a great demeanor to play quarterback. Never gets too high, never gets too low, and he’s a really great teammate. He just needs to continue to be those things.”

CaneSport’s Take

Consistency will be a major thing to watch for Anderson this season. We had a chance to watch him throw live over the summer, and while his ceiling was immediately apparent, he also had plenty of highs and lows. But if he reaches the level his coaches believe he can, we could see his ranking skyrocket this fall.
