4-star LB Gavin Nix building great relationship with Miami: “It’s a lot of love down there”
While Miami may have its eyes keen on securing top 2024 prospects at the moment, the Hurricanes are also keeping a close eye on a handful of 2025 talent, including Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy linebacker Gavin Nix who has begun to forge a strong relationship with the entire Canes staff and specifically coach Derek Nicholson.
“It’s been great, and ever since August 1st, we’ve been doing some big things,” Nix told CaneSport. “With Coach DNic (Nicholson), I love his passion for the game, and with coach (Mario) Cristobal, I really love that whole staff. Every time I go down there, they show me and my family a great time. My relationship and the stuff that we’re building with Miami is great. It’s a lot of love down there.”
Nix, who is the No. 21 linebacker nationally for 2025 according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, last visited Miami in March and was thoroughly impressed with all that he saw.
“It was great, man,” Nix said. “You see the legends on the staff and how tight the alumni are. You see legends just walking around, and those are certain guys that, when I was on my visit, like Edgerin James and Jason Taylor, were telling me tips here and there. Those players down there are blessed to be in that position. Besides all that, it was one of my favorite visits for sure.”
At the moment, Nix could not pinpoint one school that is leading the way, but he does say programs such as Florida, Florida State, Texas, Oregon, Notre Dame, North Carolina, and Miami have his attention early on.
When looking into a potential program, the 6-foot, 225-pounder values a genuine connection with the school’s staff more than any other factor.
“The main thing is what type of genuine people you have on the staff,” Nix said. “Football isn’t everything. Football can end in 20 years, or it could end tomorrow. I want to be around genuine men who are going to build and develop my character off the field. What can you do for me off the field, and what do you do for your players off the field.”
When asked what makes Miami a program Nix has such high interest in, the four-star defender said he believes the Hurricanes can provide a plethora of opportunities to succeed both on and off the field.
“Being in Miami, there’s nothing that you can’t get yourself into to help because there are so many opportunities,” he said. “Also, the people I would be getting developed by. They’ve been places that I want to be. There’s definitely great mentorship down there.”
CaneSport’s take
Coach Nicholson has captured Nix’s attention early on and has put Miami in a position to make a real run at the four-star linebacker. This will be one of the more interesting recruitments to watch as things move forward in his class.
