Miami Hurricanes have an easy schedule per Pro Football Focus … well, not so fast

A Pro Football Focus Power 5 schedule analysis of national teams came to an interesting conclusion: That the Miami Hurricanes have one of the nation’s easiest schedules.

Miami was ranked as the No. 6 easiest, as a matter of fact, behind only No. 5 TCU, No. 4 Nebraska, No. 3 Iowa, No. 2 Washington State and No. 1 Louisville.

So is this really the easiest schedule in the ACC and one of the easiest in the nation?

Well, if you simply go off each opponent’s win-loss record from a year ago, then sure, that’s the case. And that’s the only metric PFF used in coming up with its conclusion.

But, of course, last year isn’t a predictor of this year.

And it doesn’t help Miami’s cause in that ranking that the “easy” games vs. teams that should be easy wins regardless of if they had winning records in their conferences – against Bethune-Cookman, Miami (Ohio) and Temple – saw that trio combine for an 11-25 record in 2022.

Think that can skew the rankings a bit?

So yeah, don’t read too much into it.

Especially when you look at the Top 30 rankings of various organizations and you see Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina and Texas A&M usually in that mix (with Clemson and FSU in the top 10 per some).

The USA Today’s preseason poll, for instance, had five opponents higher than the Canes.

The AP Poll? Miami wasn’t even among “others receiving votes” and also had six teams in that group ahead of UM (the same five as the USA Today poll plus Louisville in others receiving votes).

Pro Football Focus, by the way, had FSU ranked No. 7, Clemson No. 14 and North Carolina No. 22 when it came out with those “easiest schedule” rankings.

So even per PFF that means a quarter of Miami’s schedule is against top 25 opponents.

So the CaneSport Take is that no, this is not an easy schedule.

And it’s made that much tougher by many of the hardest games stacked up week after week – there are back-to-back games against North Carolina and at Clemson followed by an easier matchup against Virginia. But then it’s at a good NC State team, at FSU and back home vs. a decent Louisville team.

Not easy at all.
