Will LSU flip another Ole Miss commitment?
The LSU football staff extended a new offer on Wednesday evening, and once again, it went to a senior from the 2024 class.
With the Early Signing Period approaching in December, the Tigers dialed up New Orleans cornerback Bernard Causey with a verbal scholarship offer.
Causey committed to Ole Miss on June 21, and he’s been firm to the Rebels over the past three months.
Will an offer from the in-state Tigers shake things up?
A strong start to Causey’s senior season led to an LSU offer
John F. Kennedy sits at 3-1 on the season, and a month’s worth of impressive game film at cornerback was enough for the Tigers to offer Causey a scholarship.
The LSU staff also got an in-person evaluation of Causey at June’s Elite Camp in Baton Rouge, and he made an unofficial visit to Baton Rouge for the home opener against Grambling State.
The Tigers have been in communication with Causey since the offseason, and this week’s verbal scholarship offer means the staff has given the New Orleans native the green light to join the class if he wants on board.
LSU currently has 24 commitments for the 2024 class, and 16 are Louisiana natives.
What does the offer mean for CB recruiting?
The Tigers have a trio of four-star cornerbacks committed in Cai Bates, Ondre Evans and Ju’Juan Johnson, and Warren Easton’s Wallace Foster is on board as an addition at nickel.
Still, cornerback is one of LSU’s biggest needs, and the Tigers aren’t done recruiting the position.
Texas five-star Kobe Black is no longer in the discussion after he cancelled an official visit earlier this month, and the solid start to Causey’s senior year bumped him to the forefront of the discussion.
The Tigers returned one scholarship cornerback from the 2022 roster in redshirt freshman Laterrance Welch, who has not cracked into the rotation at defensive back yet. LSU only signed one true cornerback from the high school ranks in Jeremiah Hughes, which led to Ashton Stamps moving from safety to cornerback to help with depth concerns. The Tigers added four transfer portal cornerbacks this offseason, and while Denver Harris and Zy Alexander have locked in starting jobs, Duce Chestnut’s playing time as dropped off significantly since the loss to Florida State and JK Johnson’s injury led to a season-ending surgery.
LSU has already flipped one Ole Miss commitment in Louisiana offensive lineman Joseph Cryer. With Causey’s interest in the Tigers, and a close relationship with current players as well as 2024 commitments like Wallace Foster, LSU is sitting in a good position to pull off a flip.
As the dust settles on the offer being handed out, I’m inching closer to putting in an On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) pick for the Tigers to flip Causey away from the Rebels and keep the Kennedy star home for college.
