Why USC’s Among the Top Options for Elite Texas Cornerback Dorian Brew
USC offered Elite Conroe (TX) Cornerback Dorian Brew back in early January and that offer was followed up by a Jan. 27 USC unofficial visit. That USC visit was followed up by school visits from head coach Lincoln Riley and DB coach Doug Belk on February 1.
Brew was set to announce a school choice on January 24, but ultimately decided to postpone making a school choice. At that time Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State and Texas made up Brew’s top five schools, but the offer from the Trojans was significant.
Since then, Brew’s recruitment has shifted a bit. The Buckeyes have commitments from two of the nation’s top three players at that position, and other schools have worked hard to get on Brew’s shortlist. USC is among the schools who’ve come on strong since the beginning of the year.
Three schools standing out
The mutual USC interest led to Brew visiting USC unofficially twice and him setting up a June 7-9 official visit. He’s also set to visit LSU May 31-June 2, Ohio St. June 21-23 and he’ll likely visit Texas June 14-16.
Heading into the summer, three schools look to be at the top of the heap, according to On3’s Steve Wiltfong.
USC defense
USC really struggled defensively in 2022 and 2023, but the interest level in multiple elite defensive prospects is fairly high as we approach the June official visit season. Brew’s interest is obviously pretty high in USC, considering he’s visited twice and will return to Los Angeles for an official visit June 7-9.
We asked Brew what gives him confidence in the USC program going forward?
“Of course, USC has new defensive staff, a new defensive coordinator,” said Brew. “He came from UCLA. He was giving me numbers about where the defense was the ranked at the end of the season before he left. It was a drastic change. I feel like I have confidence he can turn the USC defense around.
“And then, Doug Belk coming from Houston was also a coordinator. So I feel like having a coordinator as a position coach, he’s very good. I’ve seen the things he’s done in the past with the guys he’s coached. I feel like they’re going to turn things around.”
Doug Belk
Brew is from Conroe (TX), about 40 miles north of Houston, but Doug Belk didn’t start recruiting him until he was hired at USC.
“When Coach Belk first got there, he gave me the USC offer and we built the relationship from there,” Brew said.
Coaches are always a big draw for high school football recruits, but there’s typically more behind the serious interest from prospects.
“I have a pretty good opportunity to play,” said Brew. “I have to earn that, of course, but I feel like the chances of getting on the field early are high at USC. That’s a big dream of mine, working hard for that opportunity.
“Right now, I feel like the chances to do that are high there being coached by coach Belk. I did my research….that’s a very good coach. How he developed guys at other places, that’s very important.”
B1G
We typically ask every USC prospect we speak to for the first time, how significant the move to the B1G 10 was. Brew said it was extremely significant. So, we asked if we’d be talking about USC on Tuesday in Nashville if they were still in the Pac-12?
“I doubt it,” he said.
We then asked if distance from home would matter?
“I feel like you’re always gonna get homesick, but since I was in Ohio and then I moved to Texas, I feel like I kind of got a taste of that already,” said Brew. “I feel like my transition to college should be easier since I made that move in high school.”
Lincoln Riley
Brew said Lincoln Riley is one of the few head coaches he communicates with regularly.
“I talked to another day,” Brew said. “he’s one of the few of the head coaches I talk to. I talked to him often and a lot when I went up there for my visits. I talked to him for a couple hours He also FaceTimed me the other day on my birthday…wished me a happy birthday. So, he checks up on me time and time.
“That’s very important. It means a lot. It shows that I’m a priority that.”
What’s important
“Most importantly, a great education,” said Brew. “But also winning football games and an opportunity to win championships, to get developed, reach my maximum potential and help get me to the next level.”
Why it could be USC
“My relationship with coach Belk and that move to the B1G 10,” he said. “Competition. I feel like the competition that we’ll be getting, It’s a lot of good receivers.”
March 23
USC currently has the No. 3 ranked recruiting class. When we talk to guys like Julian Lewis, Isaiah Gibson and Justus Terry, those guys are taking a close look at who USC’ been getting commitments from. Brew said he’s also paying attention to that.
He was at USC for the March 23 recruiting event that was very impactful. He was there with Terry, Gibson, Elijah Griffin and others.
“Yeah, that was probably the most unique visit I’ve had,” said Brew. “The recruits that were there and how many commitments they had. They had maybe three or four from the class of 25…and they had a 2026 commit. I was there when Justus and Isaiah committed.”
