Transfer Portal Intel: Jonas Aidoo, Aaron Bradshaw; NC State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, West Virginia news; Tennessee momentum
The 2023-24 college basketball season has come to an end. This means the college basketball transfer portal is going full steam ahead. The transfer portal opened on March 18 for any player in college basketball to enter without penalty. That started the 45-day window that the portal would remain open. As of this writing, over 1,600 players have already submitted their paperwork to the NCAA.
Here is the latest intel on the recruitment of some of the top players who have entered the college basketball transfer portal.
C Jonas Aidoo, Tennessee
INTEL: Jonas Aidoo entered the transfer portal as On3’s No. 2 overall player. The 7-foot-0 center averaged 12.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks during SEC play this season. Still relatively new, things have been somewhat quiet around his recruitment. I am told from sources around Aidoo that he does not have any visits set yet. While over 30 high-major programs reached out initially, I am hearing that Arkansas, Baylor, Ole Miss, UNC, and USC are schools to pay attention to. Continue to watch the visits, I think this one could move along quietly.
G Shakeel Moore, Mississippi State
INTEL: Shakeel Moore started his college career at NC State and spent the last three seasons at Mississippi State. The 6-foot-1 guard started 66 games in Starkville, helping the Bulldogs make the last two NCAA Tournaments. While I am told that Moore does not have any visits lined up yet, two programs I am hearing have interest with him are NC State and Texas A&M. Moore has been through the recruiting process with both schools before so he might not take any visits. Continue to see if anyone else jumps in.
G Rodney Brown, Cal
INTEL: Rodney Brown is a 6-foot-6 shooting guard and a former three-star recruit. The California native visited Virginia Tech this weekend, the first coming out of the dead period. I am told by sources that the visit went very well and the Hokies are carrying a lot of momentum coming out of the weekend. Based on the intel I have received, I have placed an RPM for Brown to ultimately choose Virginia Tech.
F Malik Dia, Belmont
INTEL: Before the April 4-11 dead period, Malik Dia visited SMU. He just completed a visit this weekend to Ole Miss. Dia is listed as a 6-foot-9 forward who began his career at Vanderbilt before breaking out last season at Belmont. Dia averaged 16.9 points and 5.8 rebounds during his sophomore year with the Bruins program. One school I am told to watch here is Arizona, among others. I have also been told that there have been talks of a return to Vanderbilt as well. A source close to the recruitment told me that the Ole Miss visit went well and there is some cautious optimism coming out of the weekend. Recruiting can be fluid so continue to pay attention to visits and timelines.
C Aaron Bradshaw, Kentucky
INTEL: I wrote last week, after Aaron Bradshaw went into the Transfer Portal, that Ohio State and USC were two programs I was immediately told to watch with the 7-footer. Bradshaw went on a visit to Ohio State this weekend. Sources close to the recruitment tell me that the visit went well and that Ohio State likes where things are at. Naturally, the recruitment is not done. UNC and Texas are two other programs sources suggest to monitor here. The Tar Heels are in on a couple of big men with Yale transfer Danny Wolf scheduled to come in this weekend. Even with some Buckeye momentum, the timeline of things is worth paying attention to.
F Joshua Jefferson, Saint Mary’s
INTEL: Joshua Jefferson visited Virignia this weekend. In speaking with the 6-foot-7 forward after the visit he told me, “The visit was amazing. I loved the players and the coaches. The support from the community was great.” Jefferson has shaken up his visit schedule a little. He canceled his visit to VCU and replaced it with an April 16 trip to TCU. He will continue with his April 19 visit to Iowa State.
F Toby Okani, Illinois-Chicago
INTEL: Toby Okani took his official visit to West Virginia this weekend. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 11.1 points and 6.8 rebounds this season for UIC. Okani made an early visit to St. Bonaventure and he is scheduled to visit next weekend to LSU. A source close to the recruitment said that the visit to West Virginia went well and they will be interested to see if he makes it to LSU. As of Sunday evening, the visit is still on. Continue to monitor.
G Ryan Conwell, Indiana State
INTEL: Ryan Conwell averaged 16.6 points this season while shooting 40.7 percent from three. The 6-foot-4 guard, originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, took his first official visit this weekend. He went to NC State. Sources close to the recruitment said the visit went well. I am told that Conwell is expected to see Xavier, Vanderbilt, and Ohio State coming up. Conwell’s former head coach at Indiana State, Josh Schertz, took the job at Saint Louis. Continue to pay attention to visits.
F Grant Newell, Cal
INTEL: Grant Newell started 39 games over his two seasons at Cal. The 6-foot-8 forward also averaged 6.8 points and 3.7 rebounds. Nowell has set a visit to Utah State on April 15. The Chicago, Illinois native is setting dates with Saint Louis and Colorado State as well.
F Cedric Coward, Eastern Washington
INTEL: Cedric Coward earned first-team All-Big Sky honors this season. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 15.4 points and 6.7 rebounds. The Fresno, California native tells me he has set an official visit to Washington State for next week.
