Top 100 safety Zech Fort ready to make third visit to Michigan

Top 100 safety Zech Fort has already been to Michigan twice.

The elite 2026 prospect out of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy made his first trip to Ann Arbor in the spring and returned in early June.

“Every time I go there, I feel at home at Michigan,” Fort said. “It’s definitely a great place. I was impressed with the people around the program and the whole defensive staff. I really liked the weight room. It’s humungous. They also have two indoor fields.”

With two visits under his belt, it’s safe to say that Michigan is a strong contender for Fort early on in his recruiting process.

“Michigan is very high on my list,” Fort said. “Michigan is great at developing defensive back. That’s what I’m really looking for in a college. The put a lot of dudes in the league every single year, especially at the safety position. That’s something I’m big on as well.”

Relationships also matter to Fort.

Both Michigan safeties coach Jay Harbaugh and cornerbacks coach Steve Clinkscale made big impressions on him during his two offseason visits.

“I feel like I can be myself around them,” Fort said. “At the same time, they still critique me like I’m one of their players. I need to know what I’m doing wrong to get to the next level, so I appreciate that.”

Fort has already scheduled a third visit to Michigan, which is set to take place in November when the Wolverines host rival Ohio State.

“I’m excited to get back for that game,” Fort said. “That’s one I don’t want to miss. I’m excited to see what they can do in that game. I want to see them in the playoffs again, and I want to see them win a national championship.”

Along with Michigan, Fort, who is originally from California, holds offers from Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, USC and a number of other major programs.

At 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, Fort is ranked as the No. 4 safety and No. 33 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Industry Recruiting Ranking. He is also ranked as the No. 4 overall recruit in the state of Florida in the 2026 class.

Michigan holds the lead for Fort on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine with a 29.4 percent chance of landing him. Florida State is in second place with a 13.5 percent chance of landing him.
