Tide in the NFL: Tracking Alabama players in Week 2 of preseason

The second week of NFL preseason games is in the books, and Alabama was once again well represented with several former Crimson Tide standouts contributing across the league.

A lot of players still watched from the sidelines, but a number of former Alabama stars also saw the field. Tight end Cameron Latu and wide receiver Cam Sims both scored touchdowns for their clubs, while safety DeMarcco Hellams picked off his second pass of the preseason.

Three quarterbacks started games in Week 2, with Jalen Hurts being the only one to remain in street clothes, and that means Tua Tagovailoa made his first appearance since Dec. 25, 2022, after dealing with a concussion. The former Alabama standout completed five of his seven passes for 61 yards and recorded a tackle after throwing an interception.

“It was awesome,” Tagovailoa said returning to game action. “You get all the feelings that you normally feel of getting back out there again – butterflies, anxious to get out there, all these thoughts going through your head. I thought it felt really good being able to go out there, call plays with the guys, the camaraderie in the huddle.

“Things didn’t go our way, adversity hit, and it was cool to see the guys respond.”

In transaction news, the Colts signed veteran safety Ronnie Harrison this week, and he ended up with six tackles, which was tied for the most by an Alabama defender with Shyheim Carter. The Jaguars brought back snapper Carson Tinker ahead of their second preseason game but released him less than a week later. Anthony Averett’s tenure with the 49ers was also short-lived as the cornerback was released with an injury settlement.

There were 81 Alabama players on NFL rosters for the second week of the preseason. The Eagles have the most Tide alums with six, but there are seven teams that have zero on their rosters in the Buccaneers, Cardinals, Chiefs, Packers, Rams, Saints and Vikings.
