Texas Longhorns Football Roster: Scholarship allotment at every position for the 2025 Longhorns

Believe it or not, the transfer portal window opens up on April 16, so having a good grasp of the names at each position and total number of scholarships being utilized is of tremendous importance.

No matter what happens with the House v. NCAA case in the coming weeks, Texas will have to operate with an 85-man scholarship limit in the 2025 season due to Southeastern Conference regulations. So how many players are at each position and in each class? That will tell us where Texas may look to bolster the roster via the transfer portal, or possibly suffer some defections ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Opinion: Will Texas carry two kickers AND two punters into the 2025 season? Let’s address the former first. Stone replaced Auburn at the end of the season, and let’s remember a truth about college football: football players want to play football no matter their position.

Kickers want to kick, and kickers prefer to do more than just kick off. With eligibility running out for both players after this season, a portal defection from either Stone or Auburn is not out of the realm of possibility. However, it’s not something Sarkisian needs to have happen to create room for an imPort at an offensive or defensive position. Both are playing their last year on the 40 Acres if they stay.

At punter, here’s what I wrote in February that I believe holds true today:

The Longhorns brought in Bouwmeester, but that wasn’t because they’ve given up on Kern. Rather, Texas wants Kern to learn from the Aussie and get a better grasp on some of the finer points of punting, things that seem inconsequential but actually make a difference when trying to angle a kick away from a returner. The future belongs the Kern, who has handled this process well according to people close to the program, but only after Bouwmeester controls the present.
