Texas EDGE Colin Simmons calls shot with bold prediction on Red River Rivalry game vs Oklahoma

Texas EDGE Colin Simmons calls shot with bold prediction on Red River Rivalry game vs Oklahoma

In a season full of new experiences for Texas, a quite familiar one is coming in their next game. A trip up to Dallas for the Red River Shootout against Oklahoma will take place on Oct. 12 following a bye week. Star freshman EDGE Colin Simmons will play in the game for the first time as a Longhorn and expectations are already big.

Simmons believes Texas is going to “dominate” Oklahoma in a couple weeks despite having a “good squad.” This is not a rivalry where blowouts occur too often but Simmons has called his shot fresh off Texas’ win against Mississippi State on Saturday night.

“They got a good squad this year,” Simmons said. “A lot of people on that team that I know. I feel like we’re going to dominate them. But at the end of the day, we got to trust in our coaching and just get better each and every day.”

Last season saw Oklahoma pull off one of their best wins in the rivalry ever. Dillon Gabriel led the Sooners on a game-winning drive for a statement win under Brent Venables. Simmons was already committed to Texas at that point and watched his team fall short at the Cotton Bowl.

However, the year prior was a historic moment in the rivalry. Texas did pull off a blowout, winning 49-0 and bringing the Golden Hat back to Austin for the first time since 2018. A game Steve Sarkisian needed at the time, he got the job done in jaw-dropping fashion.

Between those two results, Simmons is expecting this year’s Red River Shootout to be more like 2022 than 2023.
