RJ Maryland sets all-time TD record by SMU tight ends

SMU tight end RJ Maryland set the all-time touchdown record by a Mustang tight end Saturday night in Ford Stadium against Florida State. With his 15th touchdown, the former Southlake Carroll Dragon broke Kylen Granson’s touchdown record by a tight end.

Maryland caught an 11-yard touchdown with 13:00 to go in the 3rd quarter from quarterback Kevin Jennings to break the record. He added his second touchdown with 7:42 to go in the 3rd quarter to extend his record.

RJ Maryland tied his career-high in touchdown catches in a single game with it being the third time he’s caught two touchdowns in a game.

Maryland is a consummate pro, taking after his father, College Football Hall of Famer Russell Maryland. Russell, a former Miami star, would enjoy his son breaking the record against his college rival, Florida State.

RJ is pretty low key overall though, pointing to all the greats SMU’s produced in the past instead of talking about himself. He caught the record-tying score in SMU’s win over Nevada to open the season.

“It’s great to be up there with all the great SMU tight ends that have gone through this program,” RJ Maryland said earlier this year. “Just shows the greatness of the players that came before me.”
