SMU Basketball makes push for top Dallas prospects
SMU Basketball has a big Wednesday on deck as Andy Enfield and his staff welcome multiple four-star prospects to campus. All three are from Dallas as the Mustangs look to keep the area’s top talent at home.
Here’s the rundown on who’s coming to the Hilltop.
4-star Waxahachie (Tex.) PG King Grace: One of the nation’s top prospects, Grace will visit SMU for the first time since Enfield’s staff made contact. He’ll get a chance to visit with the staff and observe workouts while beginning to build a relationship with SMU. LSU, Mississippi State and TCU are among those challenging for the Top 100 prospect. According to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Grace is the No. 52 overall prospect and No. 8 point guard. He’s fresh off a strong showing at the Under Armour circuit event last month.
“King Grace is a very competitive player, and that might be the aspect of his game that stood out the most,” On3’s Jamie Shaw wrote. “He is aggressive at the point of attack, on both ends of the court. The 6-foot-2 guard has excellent anticipation in the passing lanes and uses his speed in the open floor. While he has an interesting release, which ultimately takes his guide hand off the ball for a one-handed release. He knocked down shots when his feet were set or he was able to step into one. Each game I watched, Grace went for over two points and had a strong two-way impact on the game.”
4-star Duncanville (Tex.) SG Kayden Edwards: Edwards might be a 6-2 shooting guard, but he’s shown as of late to be a facilitator as well at the Puma Pro 16 Circuit event. He had a 41-point outburst at the event. SMU’s bringing him in for a visit to start the push to keep him home. Auburn, Arkansas, Cal, West Virginia, Texas and others have also offered him. He’s the No. 87 overall prospect in the country, as of now. He’s also been at SMU multiple times so Wednesday will be about getting familiar with the new staff.
“Edwards was impressive attacking the screen, getting the switch, and playing to the advantage,” On3’s Jamie Shaw wrote. “He showed touch at multiple levels as well as feel in traffic. Even when he could not get things going at the rim, the jump shot is always a weapon. Through the Puma Pro16 Cirucit weekend, Edwards averaged 27.0 points per contest. He knocked down 44.3 percent of his threes on 5.3 makes per game and was 25-31 (80.6%) from the free-throw line. He also added 2.5 assists to the weekend’s totals. All-in-all, this was a very eye-opening performance for him.”
4-star Duncanville (Tex.) SG BJ Davis-Ray: It wouldn’t be surprising to see SMU extend an offer to Davis-Ray, a Missouri native who now preps at Duncanville. The Top 100 prospect is one of the best wings in the country. He’s firmly in the Top 100 and among the top shooting guards. He holds offers from the likes of Arkansas, Kansas, Illinois, Missouri and others. As the Mustangs press for one of his teammates, I would expect an offer to go out. He’s got some ties with the staff that could help as well.
