ROWE: New batch of notes on Georgia’s final preseason scrimmage

ROWE: New batch of notes on Georgia’s final preseason scrimmage

Georgia’s second scrimmage is in the books and there is just one more Saturday before the Bulldogs open the 2024 season vs. Clemson in the Aflac Kickoff game. DawgsHQ has already posted one batch of intel from the scrimmage and today we’re putting out the second batch.

*** We always like to start with quarterback where sources have told DawgsHQ that none of the units looked particularly smooth. Yes, that goes for the offense under Carson Beck. In fact, outside of spurts here and there, it was a little sloppy at times. I’m told that the offense was better in situational work, however.

Multiple contacts tell DawgsHQ that Gunner Stockton had the best day of all the quarterbacks and that Jaden Rashada really struggled. The touchdown hookup between Stockton and Nitro Tuggle in red-zone work was one of the highlights of the day. I’m told it was a one-handed grab, too.

*** Trevor Etienne only got a handful of reps in the scrimmage and I’m told that they were early on. There are two ways to look at that. Either they are making sure he stays healthy or he’s not going to be available in week one. I haven’t heard either way but based on how this has played out I feel like Etienne will be available for the first game.

Nate Frazier was banged up in the scrimmage but all of the intel we’ve gathered since it was over suggests that he’s going to be fine. I’ve also picked up on some Chauncey Bowens chatter from a couple of sources now. I’m not sure how much work he got with the twos and threes but I’m told he was impressive at times.

*** I mentioned Cole Speer in the initial report but since then I’ve spoken to multiple people who labeled him as a scrimmage standout. He had a catch and run of more than 50 yards but was run down by CJ Allen. I’ve also heard some good things about him and Branson Robinson from the two-minute offense.

A couple of sources have told me that Arian Smith caught several passes on the day and showed the ability to separate in the short to intermediate area. Dominic Lovett played a few snaps early on but didn’t see much action after that.

*** Add Tate Ratledge to the list of offensive players who saw limited reps in the scrimmage. He started the day with the first-team offense at right guard, repping that for a series and then worked with the twos at center for a series or two later on. That was about it.

After doing some digging, I was surprised to learn that Jared Wilson took on a pretty big workload in the scrimmage. I expected him to get a few series and that would have been a positive sign that he was ready to roll for the season opener. The fact that he took the majority is a positive development there. Looking back at our reporting since the winter and spring, there are people in the Georgia program who believe that Wilson is as good or better than Sedrick Van Pran once the ball is snapped. He’s also no slouch when it comes to knowing the offense.

*** The defensive line is banged up but there’s no shortage of positive buzz about the young guys in that group. I’ve talked with at least three sources to this point and every single young defensive lineman has been brought up. Joseph Jonah-Ajonye is the one everyone talks about but Jordan Thomas is up there, too.

Nnamdi Ogboko‘s name has started to come up more and more lately. From his frame and ability to move to his effort, the buzz is growing with him. Nasir Johnson and Justin Greene have also been mentioned from the scrimmage although less prominently than the other freshmen and Jamaal Jarrett.

*** Ellis Robinson also had a really good scrimmage. I’m told that he had multiple pass breakups kind of locked up one side of the field. I’m not sure how many reps he’s getting with the ones just yet but I’m getting the feeling that he’s going to be playing early in that season opener.

I’m also told that Dan Jackson had a couple of flash plays in the scrimmage, both driving on the ball in front of him. A couple of sources have also singled out Joenel Aguero from the STAR position. It seems that he has won that battle.
