Purdue football: Looking back at busy weekend of 11 official visitors

Smiles, everyone! Purdue welcomed 11 recruits from the Class of 2025 this past weekend in what will be the busiest weekend in June during official visit season.

The staff secured one commitment from the weekend, which included paintball at the Paintball Barn and swimming at the Lafayette Country Club. And there was plenty to eat at Ripple & Company, too. The press box also served as an eating venue.

The slate of visitors had a decidedly defensive flavor, as eight of the 11 were on the defensive side of the ball, including three from the secondary (Mason Alexander, Seaonta Stewart, Dawayne Galloway) and three linemen (Drayden Pavey, Jayquan Stubbs, Kyler Garcia). The staff also welcomed a rush end (Eli Jones) and inside linebacker (Grant Beerman).

“I had a really awesome visit, from minute one, with the coaches, staff and players,” said Beerman, who next will visit Michigan State and then West Virginia. “I was able to spend a lot of time with Coach (Ryan) Walters and especially with Coach (Kevin) Kane and Coach (defensive analyst Jeff) Smart. We talked a lot of football, did a ton of tours and really spent time digging into my potential roles in the program.”

The three offensive visitors were tight end Brian Kortovich and offensive linemen Cam Gorin and Takhyian Whitset, who committed April 30.

No doubt, Purdue would love to gain commitments from in-state products Alexander and Gorin, who are teammates at Hamilton Southeastern High. They were the only in-state players to visit. There also were players from Florida (1), Ohio (6), and Tennessee (2)

“I loved the visit and everyone,” said Alexander, who will check out Pitt next and plans to go public with his commit on August. 17. “They were just humble and respectful. I just felt the culture which Coach Walt pours into that team.”

Added Stubbs, who will visit Minnesota next: “The visit to Purdue was enlightening and inspiring. I was impressed by the university’s blend of academic rigor and supportive community. The campus tour, meetings with faculty and interactions with current students provided a comprehensive view of the opportunities available at Purdue.”

Purdue played host two official visitors the first weekend: offensive lineman Harrison Cluff and rush end Mariyon Dye. Eight OVs are on tap this coming weekend. Staffers hope they made a good impression on the large group from last weekend as it looks to add to the six commitments it already has in the Class of 2025.

“I also appreciated the time with the strength and conditioning coaches and watching a team lift,” said Beerman. “The staff did a great job of making sure all of my questions were answered.

“It was great to spend time with the coaches and their families. My family really enjoyed getting to know them a bit more and spending time with them during the trip.”
