Previewing Miami LB commit Cam Pruitt’s senior season: ‘I know he’s going to get better’

Theodore (Al.) Miami 2024 four-star linebacker commit Cam Pruitt made a name for himself at the high school level with his versatility, and as he goes into his senior season, Theodore head coach Steve Mask is finding increasingly creative ways to get Pruitt involved.

Pruitt has developed into a jack-of-all-trades talent for Theodore, playing inside linebacker, outside linebacker and safety, and he has highlights as a pass-rusher, run-stopper and in pass coverage. And this year, Mask wants to allow the 6-foot-2, 185-pound linebacker to impact both sides of the ball.

“At some point in time we’ve played him at wide receiver,” Mask said. “We’ve got to be very careful about monitoring his snaps and all of that kind of stuff, but we’re looking for him to be very impactful.”

So where does a player like Pruitt, a top-400 recruit and top-35 linebacker in the 2024 cycle with offers from Alabama, LSU, Florida and Notre Dame, need to improve heading into the most important season of his high school career?

“Practice is the one thing I don’t think a lot of high school kids understand,” Mask said. “I’ve been doing this a long time, and sometimes kids can coast and get away with some things, but at the next level, there’s no coasting. Once you start, you go until it’s over. There’s no slow-down in between. I think the biggest thing is he has to learn how to do it for an extended period of time in practice and not just in bits and spurts.”

Mask hasn’t been surprised Pruitt has attracted the amount of attention he did, which included him receiving a committable offer from Alabama in late July following a workout in Tuscaloosa, but Pruitt has remained grounded throughout the process. Mask added he’s done a good job of “being where his feet are” and is focused on helping Theodore to a strong senior season.

“I think sometimes kids set unrealistic goals for themselves and try to do things that are not really realistic,” Mask said. “He’s still a senior in high school. He’s not a college player yet. You want him to continue to improve, and the expectation is he’ll continue to improve. He doesn’t need to worry about playing at Miami right now; he needs to worry about playing for Theodore. He’ll take care of things at Theodore, and I know he’s going to get better and he’s going to continue to improve.”

CaneSport’s Take

Pruitt’s stock has only continued to rise this summer as programs continued to evaluate him, and he looks poised for a dominant senior year. I’d argue he’s one of the most versatile prospects in this year’s recruiting cycle and could reasonably be recruited at safety, nickelback or inside or outside linebacker, and the Hurricanes have been high on him since May.
