Previewing first June official visit weekend at Michigan

Previewing first June official visit weekend at Michigan

Official visit season is officially here. And that means Michigan is set to host several top recruits throughout the month of June.

That starts this weekend as the Wolverines are set to host a handful of key 2024 target.

Here is a full preview.

WR Jordan Shipp, Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day

A four-star prospect, Shipp has long been one of Michigan’s top targets on the wide receiver board. Shipp, of course, is a teammate of U-M commits Jadyn Davis and Channing Goodwin and was supposed to join them for their official visits on June 16. However, Shipp moved up his date, which may benefit the Wolverines. It’s important to make Shipp feel like an individual and a priority regardless of his teammates’ status. Shipp will be the only wide receiver on campus, which means he will get Ron Bellamy undivided attention. Michigan is in a really good spot for Shipp, who is ranked as the No. 63 wide receiver and No. 380 overall prospect nationally, going into this official visit. However, in-state programs North Carolina and NC State are pushing hard to keep him close to home. Georgia has also shown some interest as of late.

EDGE Brian Robinson, Austintown (Ohio) Fitch

Michigan has been considered the leader for Robinson, who is ranked as the No. 12 EDGE and No. 175 overall recruit nationally, dating back to last fall and is still the favorite on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. Robinson has visited Michigan on several occasions, and there isn’t much else that can really move the needle on this official visit. The mood around Robinson’s recruitment has been simple — if you want in, there is a spot for you. It would be smart for Robinson to join the class soon as the Wolverines are in the running for a number of other EDGE targets. The longer this one drags out, the more likely it is Robinson won’t be in the class. For now, however, Michigan is still the team to beat. Kentucky has made things interesting, though, and Penn State remains heavily involved as well.

EDGE Jacob Smith, Cheshire (Conn.) Academy

Michigan surprised many when it turned the tide with four-star defensive lineman Jerod Smith and earned a commitment from him this spring. Now, the Wolverines are looking to seal the deal with his twin brother and fellow four-star prospect Jacob Smith, the No. 18 EDGE and No. 231 overall recruit nationally. Look, Jacob wants to make his own decision. That’s why he opted to wait and still has plans to officially visit Kentucky and Nebraska. But at the end of the day, it’s going to be extremely difficult for him to pass up the opportunity to play with his sibling at the next level. Michigan is also the superior program and has plenty to sell to pass rushers. I have an On3 prediction in for U-M going into his visit and feel very optimistic that Mike Elston and company will get the job done.

S Marquis Gallegos, West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade

Gallegos is a bit of a mystery man going into this official visit weekend. The On300 prospect made a swing through the Midwest this spring and notched an offer from Michigan while in Ann Arbor. Michigan safeties coach and area recruiter Jay Harbaugh has quietly made progress with Gallegos over the last month and will have a chance to really move the needle during his OV. We should know a lot more about where Michigan stands following his trip. Gallegos, who is ranked as the No. 18 safety and No. 223 overall recruit nationally, is also slated to make official visits to Notre Dame, Oregon, and USC, which is considered the favorite.
