Penn State-West Virginia to resume after lengthy lightning delay
After a lengthy lightning delay, Penn State and West Virginia will resume and begin the third quarter at 4:05 p.m. in Morgantown, per Daniel Gallen of 247Sports. It is contingent on no more lightning strikes.
Penn State led West Virginia 20-6 going into the halftime locker room. There were controversial calls, James Franklin quotes (that were at least funny) and the Nittany Lions’ offense coming to life.
Going into the half, it was a slow start for the Nittany Lions. But, once they got into rhythm, it was a different ball game.
That included a three-play, 73-yard drive to extend the lead to two scores right at the end of the half.
“Well, early on and we just didn’t get in rhythm, whether it was penalties or whether it was fumbled snaps and things like that,” Franklin told FOX’s Jenny Taft. “Once we got them calmed down, I thought we did some really good things.”
“Yeah, offensively, we got to sustain some drives, and I’m saying that to help our defense out,” Franklin said. “And then we got to get some three and outs on defense to get them off the field. They did a good job sustaining some drives, and that obviously right before the half was big. I’ve been saying since the 90s: ducks accepted, spirals preferred, but we’ll take a duck anytime.”
Pat McAfee had West Virginia native and ESPN analyst Nick Saban on to preview the matchup and discuss a number of topics. The former Alabama coach believed the Mountaineers were capable of pulling off the upset.
“Well, I think West Virginia’s proven that they can run the ball effectively against just about anybody they play. I think that’s going to be the challenge for them against Penn State,” Saban said. “Penn State’s a pretty good defensive team and they like to pressure a lot and create negative plays. So I think if the quarterback for West Virginia can create a little balance in the game for them, throw the ball effectively, that’ll have a huge impact on the game.”
