OPINION: Miami landed its 7th 2025 commit over the weekend … who could be next?

Birmingham (Ala.) Parker three-star cornerback Timothy Merritt’s decision to commit to Miami during last weekend’s official visit came as somewhat of a surprise. But now that the 6-foot-2, 180-pound cornerback is a Hurricane, who could be next to pull the trigger?

CaneSport takes a look at four prospects who could be next to commit to Miami:

3-star IOL Gabe Smith
+++ Smith, who will visit Miami June 21, has long said he believes he could commit during an official visit if the time feels right, which makes him an obvious candidate to be Miami’s next pledge. The Hurricanes have been high on Smith since the start of the year, and CaneSport has had him on our under-the-radar prospects for Miami fans to know lists since February. Smith has already visited Miami twice this year and has the Hurricanes in his top two along with Georgia Tech, and if his visit later this month goes well, it’s very possible he pulls the trigger in the next 10 days.

4-star CB Chris Ewald
+++ Ewald is between Miami and Georgia with official visits set to both the next two weekends and an announcement likely coming June 27. In the event Miami doesn’t land another commitment during an official visit weekend — which, as we’ve said for more than a month, is very possible — Ewald could be the next man up after he wraps up his final visit. Miami has continued to push for the local four-star cornerback and has consistently impressed, although we’ll see if Georgia can make a final impression on his trip to Athens June 21.

3-star OT Jaden Wilkerson
+++ Wilkerson, like Ewald, is looking to make an announcement later this month or in early July and is considering Miami along with Rutgers and Syracuse. Wilkerson visited Miami last weekend and has been high on the Hurricanes since his initial visit to campus in early April, and if things continue trending in the right direction there’s a good chance he ends up a Hurricane. Rutgers and Syracuse have done good jobs with him as well, but he’s consistently responded well to head coach Mario Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal.

4-star EDGE Zion Grady
+++ Grady is the highest-ranked prospect on this list and was RPM’d to Miami in April, but this has turned into a Miami-Florida State battle for one of Alabama’s best. Grady was initially committed to Alabama before decommitting following Nick Saban’s retirement, and the most buzz has been around the Hurricanes and Seminoles over the last month. He took an official visit to Miami the first weekend of June and was in Tallahassee this past week. He’s expected to announce a decision the first week of July. He’ll also take official visits to Auburn and Tennessee.
