On3 Scouting Director Charles Power breaks down Penn State commit Max Granville
It’s been nearly two weeks since Penn State head coach James Franklin and his staff locked up a commitment from Texas edge rusher Max Granville.
Listed at just under 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, Granville has proven to be a special athlete. Not only did he compete in multiple track and field events this past spring, but he put up some eye-catching times at his size, posting a 6-foot, 3-inch high jump, a 15.08-second 110-meter hurdle and throwing more than 53 feet in the shot put.
On the field, Granville has been excellent as well, which led to him ultimately earning more than 30 scholarship offers over the past few years. The Nittany Lions were considered a serious contender for months but were believed to be behind Oklahoma throughout most of his recruitment. Both Baylor and Texas A&M also hosted Granville for an official visit.
So do fans need to know about the newest Nittany Lion edge rusher? We caught up with On3 Scouting Director Charles Power to get his thoughts on the Sugar Land, Texas, native.
Also, in case you missed it, we did multiple interviews with both Max and his father, Billy Granville, earlier this week. Nittany Lion fans can catch up on those below.

Charles Power breaks down PSU commit Max Granville
Power: Max Granville is a highly explosive and versatile front-seven defender. I think he’s a guy who looks to be a great fit in Penn State’s defense. I think, for starters, this is a marriage between a recruit and school that really makes a lot of sense when you look at the player and how he fits Penn State’s scheme.
But what stands out right away is that he’s extremely explosive. He’s a guy that we’ve known about as a blue-chip prospect for some time, dating back to his sophomore year. He can really run and gets after the passer so explosively. He just has a lot of quick twitch ability and I think that allows him to project as a speed rusher. He’s a guy who, yeah, he’s twitchy, but he’s also got really good strength. He’s just physically developed more than most when it comes from a strength and athletic explosiveness perspective. Max was a 6-2 high jumper and threw the shot put at over 50 feet this spring. Those are great numbers for a guy of his size.

Granville has a bit of a hybrid body type at around 6-2 and a half, 225. I wouldn’t say he has elite length, but I think when you look at what Penn State has done with guys like this, they’ve been able to really use this body type to create pressure off the edge. They’ve shown a lot of versatility in how they’ve deployed those guys.
So, I think this is a really good fit. Penn State, based on their track record and what they’ve shown with guys like this, I think they’re suited to put Max Granville in a situation that could really optimize his strengths. We’ve had him ranked as an edge and we’ve had him ranked as a linebacker. I still could kind of see him going either way positionally, because I think he has the versatility to play both. But I think that pickup really makes a lot of sense. I think he’s just a great fit for what Penn State likes to do and I think Penn State’s a great fit for him as well.
