Ole Miss’ Mike Bianco rips ump, calls for Mississippi State ejection, gets ejected in return
Ole Miss head baseball coach Mike Bianco wasn’t happy with the umpires late during the team’s game against rival Mississippi State, leading to his ejection from Saturday’s game.
The incident happened when catcher Johnny Long of Mississippi State hit a home run during the 12th inning. As he did so, he held the bat in the air before flipping it to celebrate. That, according to Bianco, should have led to an ejection and he ripped into the ump over it. That’s how he ended up getting tossed in return.
You can watch the incident, here:
Mike Bianco can be heard repeatedly cursing at the umpires. He’s heard shouting, “You’re supposed to f****** throw him out. You’re supposed to f****** throw him out.” At that point, the audio from the mic that was picking him up gets cut off and the broadcast takes over again, explaining what Bianco was frustrated about.
The video then goes to show Bianco still apparently screaming in the face of the umpire while the umpire isn’t particularly interested in hearing from him. He got tossed and then he got more animated as another umpire ran in to try and calm down the situation.
Interestingly, the broadcast agreed with Mike Bianco that Johnny Long should have been tossed from the game for how he flipped his bat.
Long has been making headlines lately for Mississippi State. The catcher was involved in a play at the plate against Georgia just a week ago where he kneed the Georgia player and started a benches-clearing incident that led to 11 players being ejected and several suspensions.
If Mike Bianco was trying to spark his Ole Miss team, it ultimately worked. Even though Long’s home run gave Mississippi State a one-run lead in the top of the 12th inning, Ole Miss bounced back. In the bottom half, Jackson Ross had a walk-off two-RBI single to win the game. It was the third time in the game and the second time in extras that Ole Miss needed to come from behind.
It’s been a difficult season for Ole Miss. The team is 19-16 and 4-10 in SEC play. The win over Mississippi State ended an eight-game losing streak for Ole Miss. That stretch included two series where the team got swept by Kentucky and Arkansas.
At this point in the season, Ole Miss is fifth in the SEC West standings. Mississippi State, meanwhile is third with a 7-7 record in conference play.
Ole Miss and Mississippi State are finishing up their three-game series on Sunday afternoon.
