Ohio cornerback Josh Johnson recaps Penn State official visit and updates commitment timeline

Penn State welcomed cornerback Josh Johnson and his family to State College this weekend for an official visit. A native of Ironton, Ohio, Johnson has long been one of the Nittany Lions’ top targets in the class, earning an offer from the staff back in November.

Over that time, he’s taken two unofficial visits to Penn State. He said he already had a good feel for what the school and football program had to offer coming into the weekend. Because of that, this trip was mainly about bonding with the staff and showing his family what the Nittany Lions have to offer.

“It was really just all about how well they treated me and family down here,” Johnson said, when asked what stood out this past weekend. “It really is a family-like vibe down here, for sure. Everyone is one at Penn State.”

He went on to add, “As you know, my relationship with Penn State has already been good. Really, it’s been better than most. They were on me early in recruiting and that allowed me the chance to talk with their staff a lot. I wouldn’t really say I learned a lot new but that’s because of how good our relationship is and because of the visits I’ve been able to take. But those are all my guys up here. Everyone is down-to-earth. It’s so easy to sit back and talk about anything with them.”

Johnson, who stands at 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, said that both head coach James Franklin and cornerbacks coach Terry Smith once again preached that he’s a priority for the Nittany Lions.

“They just made it clear that they want me. They talk about that all the time,” Johnson said. “We talked about the type of player I am and how I can make an impact with them. They said they love my physicality and how I always bring that onto the field. But also, they love me and my family. They want to bring us here and give me the chance to do what I can do. I have nothing but good things to say about all of them.”

Johnson was hosted this past weekend by Penn State cornerback Kolin Dinkins, but he said he spent a lot of time with multiple members of the team.

“Kolin and the whole team were all cool guys. We played a lot of basketball and talked,” Johnson said. “They were asking about my background and where I’m from. I thought they were all really cool people. I could see myself being surrounded by those guys.”

A high three-star prospect according to On3, Johnson originally planned to take official visits to Arkansas and Iowa these next two weeks. However, after seeing Penn State and Louisville, he said he’s close to shutting down his recruitment.

“I’m done taking my visits,” Johnson said. “After this and Louisville, I feel pretty good about what I want to do. I think I’ll be making my decision soon.”
