Michigan basketball releases 2024-25 roster: Newcomer jersey numbers, weight changes, more

Michigan Wolverines basketball is heading into its first season under new head coach Dusty May, and the roster is now officially set, with the team releasing it Monday afternoon. The Wolverines have 12 scholarship players and three walk-ons for a total of 15 players.

Notably, Michigan has just three returning scholarship athletes — graduate guard Jace Howard, graduate guard Nimari Burnett and redshirt senior forward Will Tschetter.

Howard has switched his jersey number from 25 to 7. Previously, college basketball players were not allowed to wear numbers that ended in 6-9, but that rule changed last year, with the NCAA stating in 2023 that athletes can sport any digits from 0-99. Michigan freshman guard Durral ‘Phat Phat’ Brooks is set to wear No. 8. No U-M player has taken advantage of the rule until this season.

Howard, the son of former Michigan head coach Juwan Howard (2019-24), is one of two children of members of the previous staff to be on the roster. Howard Eisley Jr., a walk-on, is the son of the former Michigan assistant with the same name.

There are some changes with the returning players on the Wolverines’ roster, with Burnett gaining an inch on his listed height — now appearing as 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds. Tschetter, meanwhile, shedded 15 pounds, down from 245 to 230. He’s also listed as a redshirt senior this season, after being a redshirt sophomore a year ago; he still has two seasons of eligibility remaining (including 2024-25). Howard was listed at 6-foot-8, 225 pounds last season but is now 6-foot-7, 215.

A notable change among the newcomers is that junior guard Roddy Gayle Jr. is now 6-foot-5, 205 pounds, after showing up as 6-foot-4, 200 pounds at Ohio State in 2023-24. Graduate forward Vladislav Goldin, a Florida Atlantic transfer who played for May in Boca Raton, is now 7-foot-1, 250 — up 10 pounds from last season.
