Miami begins early recruiting push to flip local Notre Dame 2025 DL commit
Miami didn’t offer Miami (Fla.) Palmetto 2025 defensive tackle Davion Dixon until months after he committed to Notre Dame, but he’s heard from the Hurricanes almost every day since coaches became permitted to directly call and text 2025 recruits.
Dixon remains committed to Notre Dame and said he sees himself ultimately playing for the Irish, but the Hurricanes continue to remain on his radar thanks to the program’s history and status as the hometown school. He attended Miami’s 48-33 win Saturday over Texas A&M and plans to return to South Bend for Notre Dame’s Sept. 23 home game against Ohio State, although Texas, USC, Michigan, Wisconsin and Oregon State have picked up contact with the 6-foot-3, 305-pound defensive tackle lately.
He isn’t actively looking to flip from the Irish, but with more than a year left before his signing day, Dixon said anything can happen.
“(Miami) is pretty cool,” Dixon said. “I don’t know if I want to stay in Miami, but it’s a cool place to be. They’ve got legends, Ed Reed and all of them, and it’s a cool place to be.”
Miami’s staff wants to bring Dixon back to campus for return visits and has repeatedly told Dixon “when you’re in Florida, you can’t leave Florida.” Miami sophomore defensive tackle Leonard Taylor, a Palmetto alum Dixon trains with, has also started recruiting him to Coral Gables, telling him “I can train you up right.”
However, Notre Dame’s recruiting effort hasn’t slowed since his commitment.
“They still call me every day, Notre Dame does,” Dixon said. “Coach (Marcus) Freeman calls me every day, talks to me before the games and wishes me good luck and hopes I’ll stay with them for two years, but I’m pretty sure I will. It’s a good program, good academics, you get a degree there and you’re set for life. I want to be developed right so I can reach my full potential, because I want to be in the hall of fame one day.”
Dixon has continued to entertain Miami’s recruiting effort out of respect for a program that has interest in him, and he doesn’t know what might happen in the next two years. Co-defensive line coaches Joe Salave’a and Jason Taylor and head coach Mario Cristobal have all recruited Dixon as he’s emerged as an early 2025 priority recruit for the Canes.
“Miami’s a cool place,” Dixon said.
CaneSport’s Take
Dixon rewarded Notre Dame’s early interest with a commitment, and the Irish will have a great chance to shore up his recruitment with a positive visit later this month. But it’s clear Miami will have its share of opportunities to keep a defensive tackle with tremendous upside in South Florida.
