Miami 2026 commit Malachi Toney details decision to lock in with Hurricanes
Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage 2026 receiver Malachi Toney shocked the recruiting scene with his surprise commitment to Miami last week, making an unexpected ultra-early decision.
But the young star recruit felt the time was right to commit to Miami over Ohio State, Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee and others.
“Growing up, I always watched them play, and of course I want to be apart of that journey to get Miami back on track,” Toney said. “It’s just the coaching staff. The bond that they’ve built with me, that was really it.”
Miami receivers coach Kevin Beard and head coach Mario Cristobal were large reasons for his interest in the Hurricanes and have consistently made strong impressions on the 5-foot-9, 165-pound wideout on his few trips to Coral Gables. Toney was last on campus for Miami’s 7-on-7 tournament in late June where he was extremely complimentary of the coaching staff which included several off-field assistants, including former Miami star and American Heritage head coach Mike Rumph.
But with three years of high school left, why make a decision now?
“I wanted to get it out of the way so I don’t have to be focused on that stuff,” Toney said. “So I can just focus on my season and focus on winning a state championship.”
Toney plans to visit Miami for games this fall but has not locked in a specific date. He feels he can make the short drive to campus whenever he chooses, and he feels the Hurricanes have a strong plan in place for him to succeed when he arrives on campus. His contact with Miami’s staff has been relatively limited due to rules that limit the ways in which coaching staffs can have with underclassman recruits, but the staff has still impressed him when they’ve been able to interact.
“I think they’ve got some good things planned for me,” Toney said. “And once I get there, they’re going to use me in a good way. They said they’re excited to have me and they’re one step closer to a national championship.”
CaneSport’s Take
There are few commitments that come as a true surprise in today’s day and age, but Toney’s decision surprised everyone outside of his inner circle. Miami’s coaching staff must have been pleasantly surprised to hear his announcement after it was expected he wouldn’t make a decision for a couple of years, but landing a prospect like Toney shows progress in Miami’s efforts to build the pipeline to American Heritage. Toney is a truly elite wideout with massive potential and the versatility to line up in the slot or outside, although he’ll likely be a traditional slot receiver at the college level. We have little doubt he will be a top-300 prospect and one of the elite talents in the class when the initial On3 2026 rankings are eventually released.
