Kevin Harvick: ‘I learned that I’m slow’ in test before CARS Tour return to North Wilkesboro

Tonight Kevin Harvick is racing in the Late Model Stock race for the CARS Tour at North Wilkesboro Speedway. It is going to be a late night with a delay of about half an hour due to weather, but the future NASCAR Hall of Famer is ready to race.

With all of the NASCAR drivers using this time to go on vacation and rest, Kevin Harvick was more or less forced into this race. It is a makeup race from All-Star Weekend that ultimately got rained out.

Before tonight’s races, Harvick caught up with FloRacing and talked about his expectations. Harvick starts P20 of 33 drivers.

“I learned that I’m slow. That’s what I learned the most and you know it’s hard to come in here and compete with these guys when they race all the time,” Kevin Harvick told FloRacing’s Rob Blount. “The track is obviously a lot different but it’s still North Wilkesboro and for us, we’re very fortunate to have a race track like this that believes in what we do at the CARS Tour.

“You see that, this is a tough weekend to come and have a makeup race with a rain date and to have this many cars show up it says a lot about our competitors and we appreciate that. So, I’m looking forward to tonight and learning and I’ve been able to be around the cars a lot since I got done with my yearly job at FOX and have been able to be apart of the teams and be at a lot of the races and looking to have some fun.”

At this point, I’m sure Kevin Harvick is just happy to be racing. That rain and lightning was not what anyone wanted to see.

Kevin Harvick and CARS Tour wait out the rain

The lightning hold that had tonight’s events stalled was lifted at 8:15 PM EST. The CARS Tour then went through pre-race ceremonies. Now we will hope that the rain stays out for good tonight so we can enjoy racing.

Kevin Harvick will fire off P20. He is starting one spot back from Connor Zilisch. In fact, Harvick was the NASCAR driver who discovered Zilisch. While Harvick’s son was racing karts, he saw Zilisch tearing it up in his own races. Now, the kid is on the fast track to the Cup Series.

Harvick and the CARS Tour ownership group have done a great job with the series. It feels like it is a series that is taken seriously. The talent level is high and it is not easy to get a checkered flag in that series, especially as a one-off driver or part-timer.

Tonight, The Closer will be out of his comfort zone. However, he’s still The Closer. Kevin Harvick will have fun out there and it’s going to be a great night of CARS Tour racing.
