Kentucky Basketball Roster Tracker: Reed Sheppard enters the NBA Draft

Kentucky Basketball Roster Tracker: Reed Sheppard enters the NBA Draft

The day many knew was coming but didn’t want to believe it’d ever become a reality is here: Reed Sheppard is taking his talents to the NBA. After some brief hope the freshman star would stick around to play for Mark Pope, he crushed those dreams by achieving his own in becoming a likely top-ten pick by declaring for the draft and forgoing the remainder of his eligibility.

“I will be entering my name into the NBA Draft today,” Sheppard said Thursday. “BBN, you have been with me from day one, faithful and passionate. I’m asking you to go with me on this journey, I’m looking forward to taking you with me. I’ll represent you with all of the characteristics that make us Kentuckians: passion, humility, perseverance, sacrifice and joy. And one day, I’ll return to family, to friends, to Kentucky, my home. I love you, BBN. Thank you.”

Sheppard’s decision leaves just one final player weighing his options in Jordan Burks while Adou Thiero and DJ Wagner are both in the transfer portal and could still technically decide to return — no matter how unlikely.

Elsewhere, Joey Hart made his decision official, as well, returning home to play for the Ball State Cardinals where an expanded role is on the table just a few short hours from home. It’s a chance to prove himself as one of the top shooters of his high school graduating class a year ago.

As for potential additions, BYU’s Aly Khalifa came off the board on Thursday, albeit for Kentucky’s arch rival. With the Wildcats in his final three, he announced he’d be playing for Pat Kelsey at Louisville — redshirting in year one while recovering from a knee injury. That leaves Collin Chandler and Travis Perry as the lone players signed on for Pope next season in Lexington.
