DL Walter Mathis Jr. is closing in on his commitment

DL Walter Mathis Jr. is closing in on his commitment

Savannah (Ga.) Calvary Baptist Day three-star defensive lineman Walter Mathis Jr. took four official visits in May and June. He saw Clemson from May 31-June 2, Miami from June 7-9, Auburn from June 10-12 and LSU from June 21-23.

Mathis Jr. is hoping to commit in either late July or early August. Over the next few weeks, he plans to speak with his family about the pros and cons of each of the aforementioned schools and figure out the best place for him on and off the field.

“All of these schools made a big impression on me,” Mathis Jr. told On3. “When I showed up for my OVs, they laid out what they had in store for me, how I would be used in the defense and what my playing time would look like.”

Mathis Jr. is feeling like a priority to the four schools

Official visits will have a large impact on Mathis Jr.’s decision, as he learned new things about Auburn, Clemson, LSU and Miami on those trips. So far, the 6-foot-1.5, 285-pound recruit has been to Clemson three times, LSU and Miami two times each and Auburn once.

Mathis Jr. likes the coaching staffs at the four schools, so how he feels on each campus will be a big differentiator for him. The No. 41 player in Georgia currently can see himself playing in Auburn, Baton Rouge, Coral Gables and Death Valley.

“They all want me as a player and as a person,” said Mathis Jr., the No. 451 overall prospect and No. 41 defensive lineman in the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking. “Everybody from the people in the facilities to the coaches are letting me know that they want me at their school.”

Auburn, Clemson, LSU and Miami all appeal to Mathis Jr.

Auburn: “I like the vibe at Auburn and the feeling around the area. When I went up there, it was a really quiet place. It is a great place to be. Everything there is knit together. It’s one big community.”

Clemson: “Coach Dabo Swinney is a very good dude. When I sat down and got to talk with him, he showed me that he is who they say he is. He’s a very good, hardworking coach. He’s going to push you and make you better than what you were when you first got to Clemson.”

LSU: “I like the coaching staff at LSU. On one of my visits there, coach Bo Davis just arrived from Texas. Him coming from Texas to Louisiana and recruiting me shows how he is pushing for me as a person and as a player.”
Miami: “I like the city. When you go to Miami, the city is all about Miami.”
