Breaking down Michigan basketball scholarship chart after transfer portal window

The Michigan Wolverines basketball has taken shape, after loads of movement following a head-coaching change (Juwan Howard to Dusty May) and many additions and departures.

The Maize and Blue lost five players to transfer after Howard was fired: Junior forward Youssef Khayat (Bowling Green), junior guard Dug McDaniel (Kansas State), junior forward Tarris Reed Jr. (UConn), sophomore guard George Washington III (undecided) and graduate forward Terrance Williams II.

Michigan is set to have just three returning players from the 2023-24 season in graduate guards Nimari Burnett and Jace Howard and redshirt junior forward Will Tschetter. Howard, however, has not made an announcement on his status, while the other two have said they’re coming back.

Even with all the attrition, the Wolverines have been able to nearly fill their scholarship allotment by landing talent through the portal. Michigan has had six transfer commitments: Guard Tre Donaldson (Auburn), guard Roddy Gayle Jr. (Ohio State), center Vladislav Goldin (Florida Atlantic), guard Rubin Jones (North Texas), forward Sam Walters (Alabama) and forward Danny Wolf (Yale).

The Wolverines already had a 2024 signee in Grand Rapids (Mich.) Catholic Central guard Durral Brooks and added two more freshman guards in Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon’s Justin Pippen and Lakeland (Fla.) Victory Christian Academy’s Lorenzo Cason.

Michigan has at least one more scholarship available for the 2024-25 season.

What’s next?

There aren’t any prime transfer targets for 2024-25 at this point, but there are still hundreds of available players in the transfer portal, and it’s possible that the Wolverines will add pieces to the roster, May told The Wolverine.

Former Michigan signee Khani Rooths — a Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy product who asked out of his Letter of Intent following Howard’s firing — is also still available, and Michigan is in the mix.

2025-26 outlook

May didn’t just build a roster for his first season, he added players that have eligibility for 2025-26. The Wolverines took only two transfers that will be out of eligibility after this year (Jones and Goldin). That means Gayle, Donaldson, Wolf and Walters can all come back in 2025-26.

Michigan has at least eight spots filled for 2025-26, not counting Burnett, who has eligibility for that year as well.

May is also working on the 2025 recruiting class, handing out offers to Clearwater (Fla.) Calvary Christian four-star small forward Shon Abaev, Greenfield (Ind.) Central four-star guard Braylon Mullins and Needham (Mass.) Prolific Prep five-star-plus small forward AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 overall recruit in the class.
