5-star OT Josh Petty is ready for his commitment: ‘This is the position I knew I wanted to be in’

One of the top uncommitted players in the country will be off the board in the coming days. Roswell (Ga.) Fellowship Christian School five-star offensive tackle Josh Petty is announcing his commitment on Aug. 12 and choosing between Florida State, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Stanford and Tennessee. 

All five schools are still in the race to land Petty’s pledge, yet he is “really thinking about” three of them. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound recruit added that there are “a big two” in his mind. 

“I’m nervous and I’m excited,” Petty told On3. “I’m checking all the boxes right now. This has been something I’ve been thinking about. I’ve wanted to have this moment and be in these shoes since I was a little kid. Ever since I started playing football, this is the position I knew I wanted to be in and have worked for it ever since. That’s why being in this headspace right now is unbelievable to me and I’m very grateful for that.

“I wouldn’t say I’m 100% decided yet. I’ve got some ideas of schools that I think are my frontrunners. I’m going to talk with my parents and we’re going to break it down. Then, we’re going to finally break through and nail down one.” 

Each of the finalists received official visits from Petty, who returned to Georgia Tech and Florida State on July 27 and July 28, respectively. The No. 6 player in Georgia is looking forward to soon bringing his recruitment to a close. 

“I’m ready,” said Petty, the No. 29 overall prospect and No. 2 interior offensive lineman in the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking. “To finally decide it, it’s going to take my parents confirming it and saying that they believe in the decision, agreeing with my family and feeling at peace with God with it. That’s something I’ve got to come to.” 

Perry is ready to embrace the next few days before revealing his college destination

Heading into his decision, Petty feels like three of his finalists have stepped up their communication with him and “put the hammer down.” He is preparing to make a very difficult choice ahead of announcing his college destination. 

“These next few days are going to be unbelievable,” Petty said. “I am going to be thinking about my relationships with each staff, my meetings with the people and my understanding of the program. I’ll also be thinking about the players. Going down to one with all of these schools that have been showing genuine love and been real with me, it’s going to be hard. It’s going to be a gut-wrenching decision for me.”

Petty is planing to finalize his decision in the coming days and the five-star knows what he wants in a school. 

“What is most important to me is development,” Petty said. “I want to be in the NFL and also, I want to go to a school where I can get a degree that can help me be successful. I want to get a degree that, after studying and pursuing it, means something important.” 

Florida State is currently leading for Petty on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, while Georgia Tech is making a strong push to keep him in-state. Going to visit both schools again at the end of July was a positive experience for the Peach State native. 

“I think the visits helped both schools,” Petty said. “Always going down and seeing schools helps them. It was good to be down there again and reconnect with the staff. I wouldn’t say those visits made the decision, but it was good to get down there and see those schools.”

Petty offers quick thoughts on the five schools on his list

Florida State: “My sister goes there and I like coach Alex Atkins.”

Georgia Tech: “I like the offensive scheme and the offensive line staff. They also offer a great education.” 

Ohio State: “I like the competition and the development there.” 

Stanford: “I like the educational opportunities there and the location.”

Tennessee: “It was my favorite school growing up and I love the Vols. Everything they’ve got going on is great. They’re killing it recruiting, their offense is doing well and the success of the program is going up.”
