LSU Fall practice notes: Aug. 1 (Day 1)

LSU Fall practice notes: Aug. 1 (Day 1)

LSU began its fall camp on Aug. 1, starting to build towards its game vs USC in one month.

Here are my notes from the first day of fall practice on Thursday morning.

To start things off, the first unit offense scored on the first team defense to start camp on a meticulous drive. The second team offense drove as well, but was stopped in the redzone as JK Johnson had a nice pass breakup on Shelton Sampson.

Defensive notes

*** First team starters: Saivion Jones, Jacobian Guillory, Gio Paez, Dashawn Womack, Harold Perkins, Greg Penn, Major Burns (STAR), Sage Ryan (CB), Ashton Stamps (CB), Jordan Allen (S), Jardin Gilbert (S)

Second team rotated a lot on the defensive line, but Paris Shand was a constant. West Weeks and Whit Weeks were the two linebackers. JK Johnson and PJ Woodland were the two cornerbacks. Kylin Jackson and Dashawn Spears were at safety, with Ju’Juan Johnson at STAR/Nickel. A lot of rotating players between the second and third units.

Saw Michael Turner, Kolaj Cobbins, Kimo Makane’ole, and Shone Washington all rotated in often.

*** Bradyn Swinson was not at practice. Zy Alexander had a big brace on his knee and was suited up but did not participate. Javien Toviano was also suited up but did not participate.

*** PJ Woodland had some excellent reps in 7-on-7 with an interception on Rickie Collins where he had his back to the ball and made an over the shoulder type catch in the air. He had another nice pass breakup in 7-on-7 further showing his talent.

Offensive notes

*** First team starters: Nussmeier, Williams, Lacy, Hilton, Daniels, Taylor, Campbell, Dellinger, Chester, Frazier, Jones.

*** Garrett Nussmeier was good to start in 11 on 11, but in 7-on-7 later in practice had an interception (Ashton Stamps) and didn’t look as comfortable. Credit to the defense, but it wasn’t a great session in the second half of the practice. As for QB2, I though Collin Hurley looked better than AJ Swann and was able to get a ton of reps, however he did throw that interception to Woodland.

***Kylan Billiot looked fantastic. He had some nice routes with the second and third teams and had a long touchdown reception in 7-on-7 from Colin Hurley. Of course, we’ll see more as the fall continues, but Billiot looks the part and moves well.

*** Josh Williams and Kaleb Jackson rotated reps for the most part with John Emery getting in as the third running back. It’s clear Frank Wilson trusts him a lot and talked with him throughout practice.

*** Trey’Dez Green looked really smooth and athletic. Ka’Morreun Pimpton just didn’t show enough burst to me and had a drop that I thought was catchable considering his frame. GReen just looks more comfortable and more athletic.

Other notes

*** Bo Davis is certainly as loud and as animated as advertised. Frank Wilson is still one of the loudest and most animated, but Blake Baker has a similar energy.

***Brian Kelly is always the loudest and most vocal to start fall camp and that was no different, making sure everyone had energy and was focused from the start.

***The players were definitely feeling the heat. A lot of cursing the heat out and getting cooldowns throughout the practice.
