Gators ‘right there’ with Auburn for top spot with 5-star WR Caleb Cunningham

The Florida Gators appear to have made a huge move with 5-star receiver Caleb Cunningham of Ackerman (Miss.) Chocktaw County during his official visit to Gainesville this weekend.

“I’d definitely rate it a 10 out of 10 for real. Because of the hospitality they showed and the people there. It’s just a great place to be. And then to spend time with (Florida quarterback) DJ Lagway. I heard a lot of good things about Florida from him and I already know a lot of good things about Florida. It was just a good visit. It’s a great place to be. I enjoyed it.”

Cunningham is the No. 2 receiver recruit in the country for the On3 Industry Rankings. He already has visited the Gators multiple times, most recently in April for the Orange & Blue game.

He named Auburn his No. 1 school after visiting the Tigers last weekend. But now, that program has some company at the top.

“(The Gators) definitely helped themselves,” Cunningham told Gators Online. “I’m gonna say them and Auburn — they’re fighting right now. They are right there with each other (for No. 1). They did a great job (this weekend). I enjoyed everything.

The highlight of the visit?

“Building a relationship with DJ Lagway,” Cunningham said. “He said he wasn’t even supposed to be in town this weekend but when he saw my name on the list he said, ‘I gotta stay and spend time with him.’ He showed me that I’m really special. He definitely wants me and was telling me he’s got to have me. Needs me and I can make a big impact. That could be my future QB.”

Cunningham said he bonded well with Lagway.

“He could be my future QB,” Cunningham told Gators Online. “He’s a great person. We’ve got similar things. We’re both humble and he likes things I like. I know he’ll get the ball to me and getting to build a relationship with him is really big. What I want in a school is for it to have a great QB.”

Cunningham will officially visit Tennessee next weekend and Alabama the week after that.

And, he plans to return to Gainesville for the Florida-Miami game.

“That will be my first game there,” he said.

As for Cunningham’s decision timeline?

“It was going to be in December but depending on how things go it may be before then,” he said.
