WBB Offseason notes: LSU’s roster arrives for summer workouts
LSU’s work constructing the 2024-25 roster seems to be done, now it’s about developing as players and developing chemistry as a team over the summer months. Here’s the latest about how the team is doing after speaking with sources with knowledge of how the offseason is going for the Tigers.
In case you missed it: Here’s my story on the Tigers’ roster for 2024-25 and my thoughts on each player.
*** With the arrival of Jersey Wolfenbarger on Wednesday, the entire roster is now on campus at LSU. The three guard transfers, Mjracle Sheppard, Shayeann Day-Wilson, and Kailyn Gilbert arrived before Wolfenbarger, but all will join the team in the summer session for classes and workouts. Some have in-person classes, others have online classes to handle this summer.
Kim Mulkey talked after the end of the season about how she doesn’t force her team to pick things back up quickly, but over the summer under Mulkey players have the opportunity to come and go as they please. Nothing is mandated. Last year, most players were not on campus much besides Sa’Myah Smith and the incoming freshman. The others got their work in at other places or had Team USA obligations. Players will be in and out over the coming months.
Of course, these summer sessions are not practices, but workouts at various times throughout the day with coaches and trainers. It’s also good for the players to get to know one another and interact early on to build that chemistry with the newcomers.
*** Assistant coach Gary Redus posted on social media that he had tore his achilles. He was helping Mikaylah Williams and others with a workout when it happened. He is one of the key figures in development on the team as well as the lead recruiter in the program. He won’t be traveling much in the near future for recruiting and obviously will take some time to heal up over the summer. I expect Seimone Augustus to now have an even more prominent role than expected in workouts over this summer.
*** The development of sophomore Aalyah Del Rosario and the recovery of junior Sa’Myah Smith are two of the primary focuses for LSU this summer. The rest of the team will work on developing their games, but those two especially have a lot of attention with the uncertainty in the frontcourt. We’ll get a more clear timeline for Smith as we approach the fall, but at the moment I think the hope is she’s available for games in December and ready to really contribute when conference play begins. That’s just the feeling I got — not definitive.
*** We got a look at the team after they got a new order of Kobes from Nike on Thursday. They’re started to make Tik Toks together. They were dancing with Aaliyah Chavez on her unofficial visit. It seems like they are getting along well early.
