Shekai Mills-Knight felt the authenticity of Hurricanes program on weekend OV: “This visit set Miami apart”

This past weekend, the Miami Hurricanes hosted Chattanooga (Tenn.) Baylor School running back Shekai Mills-Knight for his first official visit of the summer, and the Canes looked to have moved the needle in the coveted running back’s recruitment.

“I really felt like this was real,” Mills-Knight said. “Not only was the first time great but the second time (visiting again) was better. They’re consistent with it and I love the culture, and coaching staff. They all show great vibes and I really got to see what type of people they are.”

While on campus, Mills-Knight spoke with Hurricanes running backs coach Matt Merritt, who he’s built a strong relationship with on and off the field.

“Coach Merritt has a unique soul and is a great person,” Mills-Knight explained.”He’s an even better teacher and a great mentor. I feel like chopping it up with him opened my eyes to a lot of things. I feel like I can learn a lot under his wing and I feel like he can develop me into a great back and a great person.”

After spending the last two days in Coral Gables, the No. 543-ranked prospect in the 2025 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking gained a greater understanding of how the Hurricanes envisioned him in the offense.

“They said they want one smaller back and one bigger back,” Mills-Knight said. “They think I fit the build because I’m like a Mark Fletcher every down back. The offense is set up for a guy like me and that opens up what the offensive coordinator can do. I believe it because they have Mark Fletcher, who is my frame who is already doing it. I really believe that.”

The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder has seen Miami twice this year, and he believes he got a much better perspective on the program the second time around.

Mills-Knight’s favorite part about it all?

“We had a scavenger hunt and we went to eat at these great places,” Mills-Knight said. “We also went out on the players and went on a boat ride. It was like a real vacation. But at the same time they were trying to get to know us and we got to know them.”

Following his official visit to Miami, Mills-Knight will now take OVs to Michigan (June 4-6), Alabama (June 7-9), Auburn (June 10-12), Tennessee (June 13-16) and Ole Miss (June 21).

“I feel like after I see it all it will come down to what will be the best position for me,” Mills-Knight said. “This visit set Miami apart. This was my best visit so far for sure. It was great vibes with not only the coaches but the players. I got to see what Miami really is. Other schools don’t have much events to do around. But Miami is Miami, and you can’t go wrong with that. I would say they’re definitely one of my top schools right now.”

CaneSport’s take

The Hurricanes are battling some stiff competition for Mills-Knight, who has a handful of top programs chasing his services. This visit looked to have made a great impact on where the Hurricanes stand, but they will have to sweat out a handful of visits before Mills-Knight announces.
