4-star WR Travis Smith ready to return to Auburn for official visit: ‘It’s like another home’
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE – Travis Smith, a 4-star wide receiver from Atlanta (Ga.) Westlake, is always open and honest about his recruitment and where everyone stands. Georgia and Tennessee lead the way at this time with Auburn and Alabama rounding out his top four. Still, he is very fond of Auburn and will officially visit soon. That is a visit Smith is considering a big need in trying to figure out his recruitment.
“Man, really, I’d like to get back up to Auburn,” Smith said. “You know, it’s still in the four. It’s pretty even with all four, but I feel like once I get back up (to Auburn), I will know what I’m getting into with them. I feel like every time I head up to Auburn it’s like another home. Just getting back up there, I need to see the guys again and just remember how I feel up there.”
Auburn is a place Smith has been “five or six times,” but he has not had the full experience like he will on the official visit. What is the main thing he’s looking to learn about Auburn when on his official visit?
“Just to see how I see myself in the offense,” Smith said. “I’ve been trying to watch film on pretty much all the teams, but Auburn specifically. I know that Coach Freeze is going to start calling plays again. I know last year was a little iffy, but you know, from what I saw at practice, it’s looking good, looking promising. You know, having a guy like Cam Coleman, the guy from Foley (Perry Thompson), then if you add me, that’s scary.”
Smith is the No. 59 overall player in the class of 2025, the No. 10 receiver, and the No. 11 player in the state of Georgia according to On3.
Faith is important to Smith and his family
The Auburn staff has talked with Smith and his family about their shared faith on numerous occasions. That always comes first according to Smith. Of course, there is plenty of football talk that follows.
“Well first off, with everybody on the staff, they’re always incorporating the man above,” Smith said. “Their faith–I keep saying, the faith within Auburn–just being so close to Christianity is amazing.”
“But, Coach (Marcus) Davis always has me focused on getting better. We had an hour, two hour long conversation on FaceTime when he came after my practice. He was telling me things about what to work on, stuff I was doing good, and things he’d like to see me improve on. So with him already doing that early, that was a big plus.”
Smith feels a sense of family at Auburn every time he goes. It is a place he likes to take all of his family members and will do so again on the official visit.
“A couple of times,” Smith said. “My sisters, my grandparents, I bring the whole pack with me. They love it. We’re a huge Christian family, so they love how much they bring the man above into every conversation. It’s huge, it’s beautiful.”
“I don’t know what it is about Auburn,” Smith said. “It’s like a mix of family and you feel really close to everybody. You don’t get that with everybody.”
Again, Smith is up front about where everyone stands in his recruitment. When asked if Auburn still has a legitimate shot, Smith was adamant that the Tigers are in it.
“Definitely,” Smith said. “Really just making my family comfortable, and making me comfortable as well. Every time I see Freeze it’s all good and we start back from where we left off. It’s always good–the whole staff really. It’s good being there.”
What is next for Smith when his official visits conclude?
“I’m going to have to get my questions going because there are definitely things that have not been answered,” Smith said. “You know, just having my questions out, just getting those answers I will have to conclude and compare to all the other three schools. It’s going to take time, but I think I’ll make the right decision.”
