Commitment Breakdown: What Auburn is getting in 4-star LB Tyler Lockhart
Everything you need to know about new Auburn commit Tyler Lockhart, a 4-star linebacker from Winona (Miss.) Winona Secondary School.
The Lockhart File
— Lockhart owns a tall and lean frame at 6-foot-4 and right around 200 pounds. His frame gives him plenty of room to add weight and mass as he continues to grow. He probably has a capacity of about 230-235 pounds.
— Lockhart has very good speed at the linebacker position. He has good speed no matter where he plays on the field. Many times on film, he chases down quarterbacks, and they don’t have a read on how quickly he is about to close on them.
— Lockhart plays with noticeable physicality at times, which is always good to see from a high school backer–especially a lighter one at this point.
Auburn fit
— Lockhart, with his length and size, has edge rusher in his future, but also needs to play more in space than a typical edge with his speed.
— For Auburn, Lockhart is seen as an inside backer, but his edge bending skills are pretty good too. His combination of flexibility, speed, and pursuit make him a great outside linebacker in DJ Durkin’s scheme.
Football IQ
— A few times on film, Lockhart was able to sniff out different things like tunnel screens and pass plays. He seems to have a good idea of what the offense is throwing at him.
— Lockhart has a great feel for playing in space. Some linebackers have to make a big adjustment being out in space and potentially having to cover. Lockhart looks highly comfortable in those situations.. probably more so than being in the box.
One area for improvement
— When fighting through traffic on the edge or in a mess of people, Lockhart needs to learn how to use that length to his advantage. He has not learned to create separation with his arms quite yet. He has a big advantage there and doesn’t even realize it yet.
SEC readiness
— Physically, Lockhart is not far off from being SEC ready. He may be just shy of 200 pounds, but he plays physically enough to make up for it while his strength comes along.
— As a player, Lockhart has way too many exciting tools not to get an early look at Auburn no matter the depth chart situation at the time. He is built to play in the SEC.
