Iowa basketball weekend recruiting preview
It’s been an interesting and evolving recruiting cycle for the Iowa basketball team. Fran McCaffery and his staff were able to secure one commitment fairly early on in the process and now they have actually looking to keep adding to their haul in 2024.
Currently, the Hawkeyes have a pair of verbal pledges in the Class of 2024. The first is Cooper Koch, who is a ranked as the 74th best player in the country in the consensus rankings from On3.com. Koch is a four star player and the son of former Hawkeye standout J.R. Koch. At 6-foot-7, he is a wing forward who On3.com believes is one of the ten best shooters in this class.
The other commitment popped last Friday in the form of four star power forward Chris Tadjo. He is ranked as the 66th best prospect in the Class of 2024 according to On3.com. Our national college hoops recruiting team rates him as one of the ten best rebounders in this class.
But, Iowa isn’t done with their recruiting efforts in the Class of 2024. This weekend they will look to add to the haul when another four star and consensus Top 100 prospects makes his way to Iowa City for an official visit.
That visitor is 6-foot-7 forward Pharaoh Compton. He is currently living in Las Vegas, but originally his family is from the Chicago area. Earlier this month he had narrowed his list of schools to five. Since that point, two of those schools (Tennessee and LSU) appear to have backed away. That leaves San Diego State, UNLV, and Iowa in the running. He will make his first trip to Iowa this weekend. With the two SEC schools bowing out of the recruitment, Iowa’s chances have certainly improved, but this weekend will be critical.
But, that’s not the only official visitor this weekend. The Hawkeyes will host a prime target in the Class of 2025 in forward Trent Sisley, a 6-foot-7 forward from Santa Claus, IN. Sisley holds offers from Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Ohio State to name a few. This will be his second visit to Iowa City, so the interest seems real, but right now the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine has Indiana with a 37.7% chance to land the four star forward. Purdue is at 17% and Iowa and Michigan State are at 12.3%.
Another Indiana prospect in the Class of 2025 scheduled to be on campus for an unofficial visit is Braylon Mullins. He’s a 6-foot-4 and 180 pound guard from Greenfield, IN. Mullins is one of the fastest rising prospects in the Midwest coming out of July and Iowa extended a scholarship offer. Notre Dame is a heavy favorite right now at 58.3% according to the On3.com Recruiting Prediction Machine.
Also one of the top in-state guards in the Class of 2026 will be on campus for an unofficial visit. He is Navon Shabazz, who we profiled this summer after watching him play in a high school event. Shabazz transferred back to Iowa for high school and is currently attending Assumption High School. He had spent the past few years in Florida and this summer he picked up a scholarship offer from Wake Forest after attending a team camp.
