Miami Hurricanes C Matt Lee knows a key vs. Texas A&M will be battle in the trenches: “They are all big, strong, impressive, powerful guys”

The Miami Hurricanes’ revamped offensive line was finally unveiled on Friday night, and it lived up to its billing – the first team line didn’t allow a sack, and the Canes’ run game amassed 250 rushing yards and three TDs on the ground.

A pretty good start with new faces on the line LG Javion Cohen (Alabama transfer), C Matt Lee (UCF) transfer and RT Francis Mauigoa (5-star signee) joined by returners Jalen Rivers (started at LT after playing guard previously) and RG Anez Cooper (started at end of last year as a true freshman).

“We across the board, the offensive line – we ran the offense efficiently in what we were, the game plan for Miami of Ohio,” Lee said. “From a physical standpoint the offensive line and tight ends and backs – everyone even on the perimeter was getting involved in blocking, pushing them around. We imposed our will, our style of play on them.

“Overall a good, well-executed game 1 for us.”

Of the run game in the opener, Lee said, “Last Friday we had four running backs that were all getting after it. I thought it was all impressive. From a run game standpoint the five of us (plus TE Cam) McCormick, the jumbo sets with Samson (Okunlola) and Matt (McCoy), they did a great job.”

Of Mauigoa’s first start as a true freshman, Lee said, “It was great. First collegiate football game, went out and played 61 snaps, played a good game, graded out well. Obviously you’re going to have (mistakes) here and there. Just got to college, first game. But he’s very much holding himself accountable for every little error, which is a great quality. He’s super humble, which will help him develop.”

Now, of course comes a much bigger challenge: Texas A&M, and a defensive line loaded with 4- and 5-star talent.

“Texas A&M – great defensive line, great front 7,” Lee said. “They are two-deep in their front four. They are all big, strong, impressive, powerful guys. … We have to run the ball effectively, throw the ball downfield. Execute, be smart, do all the things we have to do.”

A final thought from Lee looking ahead to the game vs. the Aggies?

“We have to keep pushing – every game, week – practice, get in even better and better shape as we go,” Lee said.
