Auburn DB commit Jayden Lewis visits for UMass game: ‘It’s exactly what I expected’
Auburn football four-star defensive back commitment Jayden Lewis was inside Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday. The Anniston (Ala.) standout was one of several recruits in attendance for the Tigers’ 59-14 win over UMass.
It was an impressive performance for Auburn under first-year coach Hugh Freeze. But Lewis wasn’t surprised.
“It went great,” Lewis said. “It’s exactly what I expected, and really even more. Hugh Freeze is big on putting up a lot of points and that’s what I was looking for.”
Lewis kept a close eye on Auburn’s defense, especially the secondary.
“Defense did great. They almost had a shutout,” he said. “(The defensive backs) looked great. They locked up, had a couple of (turnovers). They had some sacks. I saw some sacks from the safeties. The defense looked really good all put together.”
Lewis spoke to several of the recruits in attendance, including all of the commitments.
“I talked to all the recruits (and commitments), even the ones that weren’t here,” he said. “I talked to Walker (White), DJ (Barber), Demarcus (Riddick), Perry (Thompson) … all of them.”
Lewis committed to Auburn in February and has remained firm in this decision. He plans to keep it that way.
“I’ll be here for all the home games,” he said.
Lewis had huge Game 1
Lewis had one of the more impressive stat lines last week in the first game of his senior season.
He finished with 302 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns in Anniston’s 38-22 win over Wellborn. Lewis returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and returned another kickoff 85 yards. He returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown, had two receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown, scored a two-point conversion, had four solo tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception returned for a touchdown.
NEXT: Anniston (1-0) at Andalusia on Sept. 1.
Crawford talks Auburn win
Jalyn Crawford, a four-star Auburn football commitment from Parkview in Lilburn, Ga., was one of several recruits on the Plains Saturday.
Crawford, who committed to the Tigers in July, liked what he saw in Auburn’s 59-14 win over UMass.
“The game went really good,” he said. “We came out and had a great start and kept rolling. All the way through the game, we kept rolling.”
Crawford, being a defensive back, kept a close eye on the Tigers’ secondary. He noticed the freshmen on the field, which is something Auburn told him it’s not scared to do.
“I saw a lot of freshmen playing,” he said. “Kayin Lee started. Terrance Love got in. They really played the freshmen a lot, the way they said they would do and the way they said they would do with me. That was a good thing to see.
“That just shows me that I can come in and get on the field and play early. I just need to be prepared. I need to be prepared for this level.”
