Ryan Day uses Alabama situation to compare to Ohio State’s QB competition
A few years back, Alabama had multiple quarterbacks on its roster who went on to be starters in the NFL. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is hopeful that the Buckeyes have a similar situation now.
After naming Kyle McCord as the starting quarterback on Tuesday, Day compared the situation Alabama had with Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts and Mac Jones to what Ohio State currently has with McCord and Devin Brown.
“You know the theory of, ‘If you don’t have a starting quarterback you don’t have a quarterback?’ I mean that wasn’t the case for Alabama when they had Tua and Jalen and Mac Jones,” Day said Tuesday. “It all worked out great for them. That’s one example.”
Hurts was the guy for Alabama for most of that 2017 season, before Tagovailoa took over in the second half of the national championship game and led the Crimson Tide to the national title.
Ohio State also had a similar situation in 2014 when it had Braxton Miller, JT Barrett and Cardale Jones at quarterback on its way to a national title. That was due to injuries, but it still worked out for the Buckeyes.
“Ohio State attracts some of the best players in the country,” Day said. “You think about the year when the national championship was won here most recently, you had three guys who played. So you try to do the best you can. A good problem to have is when you have multiple guys you feel good about putting in the game. And I think the more we play in these games, the more we’re going to see the strengths come through and we’ll just on a weekly basis do the best we can. Try to put a game plan together that gives our team the best chance to win.”
Ryan Day explains decision to name Kyle McCord Ohio State’s starting QB
After naming Kyle McCord the starting quarterback on Tuesday, Ryan Day explained how he came to that decision. Day also revealed that Devin Brown will get opportunities, too.
“I think that Kyle has done a great job over the last two weeks of showing consistency,” Day said. “He’s played very well in practice. But Devin, also, throughout the body of the preseason, has shown that he deserves to play. So expect both of them to play. We have confidence in both of them.”
This is the first time that Ryan Day has had a situation entering a season where he plans to play two quarterbacks. Day sees it as a positive for Ohio State.
“I think that’s significant that we have two guys we feel confident playing in a game. This is something that’s a little unchartered territory for me. But you just go on what you see every day in practice,” Day said. “And I think that Kyle’s consistency the last couple of weeks has allowed him to be the starter. He deserves that. But I also think Devin deserves to play in the game, as well. So how much, all that? That’s still to be determined. But we’ve at least come up with that conclusion here.”
