Welcome to “BOILING OVER,” GoldandBlack.com’s weekly information clearinghouse, a spot for assorted bits of Purdue news, analysis and so on and so forth, intended for GoldandBlack.com members and GoldandBlack.com members only.
Please welcome new BOILING OVER sponsor T&W Design and Build, an Indianapolis construction management company since 1968 with proud Purdue graduates that specialize in changing the way customers think about construction.
PURDUE FOOTBALL
• Yes, true freshman S Dillon Thieneman is primed to start for Purdue in the opener.
• Cam Allen will be the starting nickel–or what the staff calls the “Star”–in nickel and dime packages.
• Purdue plans to issue an NFL-style weekly injury report during the season with “out,” “doubtful,” “questionable” and “probable” designations. Out means out; doubtful means a 25 percent chance to play; questionable means a 50 percent chance to play; probable means a virtual certainty of playing.
• O.C. Brothers is the No. 1 ILB. Yanni Karlaftis is the No. 2 option at ILB, ahead of Clyde Washington … for now.
• With Jamari Brown gone, who are the top four cornerbacks? Marquis Wilson, Markevious Brown, Botros Alisandro and Salim Turner-Muhammad, who has yet to practice in camp as he overcomes a hamstring injury. Keep an eye on Derrick Rogers, a true freshman the staff likes.
Ryan Walters got this tattoo as a 16-year-old. He grew up in a Baptist household and a grandfather was a pastor. He also has a tattoo on his chest of angel wings around footprints of a still-born baby from his college days.
• Defensive coordinator Kevin Kane will call the defense, and offensive coordinator Graham Harrell will call the offense.
“If there’s issues that I see, I’ll address, I’m not afraid to voice my opinion,” said Ryan Walters. “But I’m not going to coach things that I don’t know, either. So, I’m really happy that they’re here and they’ve been doing a hell of a job so far.”
• Walters is not a fan of play scripts.
“I used to hate scripting plays because now that’s not game,” he said. “It’s not real. Scrimmages and live action to the ball was always beneficial for me as a play-caller because it put me in those situations. And that was my practice.”
• Impressive that Hudson Card was named a captain despite just showing up in January. And, his election was overwhelming.
“He was by far the most vote-getter for captain as voted on by his peers,” said Walters.
• Scouts from several NFL teams have stopped by practices in August. What players are they asking about?
S Cam Allen
OL Ben Farrell
OT Daniel Johnson
DL Malik Langham
DL Isaiah Nichols
RB Tyrone Tracy
CB Marquis Wilson
QB Hudson Card
C Gus Hartwig
OLB Kydran Jenkins
S Sanoussi Kane
TE Garrett Miller
• WR Deion Burks said this week he and Tyrone Tracy are working as kickoff return men.
PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING
• S Koy Beasley–the highest rated of Purdue’s 2024 commitments–saw his senior season start poorly, suffering a broken collarbone early in his first game last Friday. The Cincinnati LaSalle High product underwent surgery on Tuesday and tells me he’ll likely be back in four weeks.
• 2024 Kentucky DL Demeco Kennedy announced on social media this week he will go public with his school of choice on Sept. 7.
• Purdue already is lining up visitors for the Sept. 2 Fresno State game.
PURDUE BASKETBALL
Purdue has the week off this week after returning from Europe. Formal practice begins Sept. 26, though there will continue to be “off-season” floor work being done in the meantime.
Zach Edey should be back around the first few days of preseason practice.
Purdue would seem pretty healthy coming back from Europe. Camden Heide is OK.
And, no, Myles Colvin was not left behind in an Eastern European hostel. America welcomed him home with open arms. (BN)
PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING
Just recapping again this week as we don’t anticipate Purdue having any recruits on campus this weekend.
But next weekend, Travis Perry, Raleigh Burgess and Jack Benter make their official visits.
By the way, should clarify, when we said a couple weeks back Purdue having its visits those “first two weekends” in September, that meant football weekends.
Gicarri Harris is officially visiting Purdue the weekend of Sept. 15 when the football team hosts a close encounter of the athletic kind against Syracuse.
Harris does have five visits scheduled, as he just announced through On3’s Joe Tipton.
Kanon Catchings visits that weekend, too. Seriously, they might be on the same flight from Hartsfield-Jackson. Maybe they can share a handrail on the Plane Train.
PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING
Saturday evening, we’ll be covering East St. Louis High School’s season-opener vs. Chicago Mount Carmel, so stay tuned that night or Sunday for coverage of Purdue commits Jesse Watson and Leon’Tre Bradford. (BN)
