Miami working to flip Nebraska commit Jacory Barney: “They let me know that they’re not going to stop recruiting me until paper gets signed”

Miami working to flip Nebraska commit Jacory Barney: “They let me know that they’re not going to stop recruiting me until paper gets signed”

Since his July 1 commitment to Nebraska after choosing the Cornhuskers over a handful of programs, Miami (Fla.) Palmetto wide receiver Jacory Barney has continued to hear from a select group of schools since making his pledge public.

Including Miami.

“Everything has been smooth, and they (Miami) show the same amount of love since when they were recruiting me,” Barney told CaneSport. “I still have schools reaching out, but it has slowed down a little bit since I committed.”

The 6-foot, 160-pound pass catcher says he hears from Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes coaches daily.

“I still hear from them like every day,” Barney said. “They let me know that they’re not going to stop recruiting me until that paper gets signed.”

After failing to land the No. 411 overall prospect in the 2024 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, Miami has not shied away from Barney, with Cristobal leading the way when it comes to his recruitment.

“The whole staff, really,” Barney said when asked who he hears from the most. “I would say coach Cristobal a lot of the time, but I talk to all of them at Miami for real.”

When asked what the South Florida native wanted to see from the program moving forward, Barney says he wants to see the Hurricanes continue to show the love and support they have had throughout his recruiting process.

“Just keep staying the same way they have been since they got serious with me,” Barney said. “Come watch me, show love, stay hard on me for real, and just show they’re really interested in me.”

While no return date to campus is set in stone just yet, Barney has been in conversation with the staff about a trip to Coral Gables as well as a game-day visit.

“I haven’t set anything up, but we’ve been talking about it,” Barney said. “I want to see a game and really see how they are progressing with the coaching staff, how much better they’ve gotten, and how they do this season for real.”

CaneSport’s take

Although Miami missed out on Barney when he committed, this looks to be a recruitment battle that will go to the very end. We saw the Hurricanes recently flip Elias Rudolph less than two months after his commitment to Michigan, and it is not uncommon to do so. By no means are we saying flipping Barney will be easy, but we expect the Hurricanes to go after the speedster until the pen hits the paper on national signing day.
