Top-40 Miami WR commit Joshisa Trader fighting to recruit No. 1 overall prospect to Coral Gables

Top-40 Miami WR commit Joshisa Trader fighting to recruit No. 1 overall prospect to Coral Gables

Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna four-star Miami receiver commit Joshisa Trader, the No. 34 overall prospect in the 2024 class, knew for some time he wanted to be a Hurricane. So now he is trying to bring his closest friends to Miami, too.

Trader is still fighting to bring No. 1 overall prospect Jeremiah Smith, a Five-Star Plus+ receiver and Ohio State commit, to Coral Gables with him, although he has faced an uphill battle. Smith committed to Ohio State in December 2022 and has remained locked in with the Buckeyes. But Trader understands the importance of bringing the nation’s top prospect to Miami and wants to play college football with his close friend.

“I’m trying to do that,” Trader said. “I’m gonna try to get him to Miami. If I get him to Miami, call me the best recruiter.”

Trader said the two previously explored playing together at Ohio State, but the 6-foot-0.5, 175-pound wideout said “it just didn’t end up how I wanted to end it.” He said he picked the Hurricanes because he felt “I should be home.”

Trader talks in-state rivals recruiting efforts, Miami visit plans

Trader said he hasn’t heard from Florida and Florida State as much recently despite the two in-state schools still hoping to flip the country’s No. 9 receiver, although both programs texted him before his scrimmage last Saturday.

He plans to attend Miami’s game against Florida State in Tallahassee this November as well as the Hurricanes’ home game against Texas A&M Sept. 9, which Smith also plans to attend. Trader will likely return for other games as well but is not sure which contests he will be in attendance for.

Trader did not take any official visits this summer while his mother recovered from health-related issues and said he has not scheduled any official visits this fall. He still plans to take an official visit to Miami and has high expectations for the Canes in 2023.

“I feel like they’re going to do pretty good,” Trader said. “My thoughts on (first-year offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson)? I’m very high (on Dawson’s offense), because he spreads the ball and gets everybody the ball. It catches my attention.”

CaneSport’s Take

Miami can’t get Trader on campus soon enough given the uncertainty in the receiver room, the offensive struggles the team experienced last year and the Hurricanes’ depth questions, and the expected offensive turnaround this fall will be vitally important to Miami remaining Trader’s top choice.

Trader has made clear he intends to be a Hurricane, but he still wants to see the offense take a step forward.
