Newsstand: Two Notre Dame players named Sporting News preseason All-Americans
Notre Dame junior offensive tackle Joe Alt made The Sporting News 2023 Preseason All-American first team, while sophomore cornerback Benjamin Morrison made the second team, The Sporting News announced Tuesday.
Both Alt and Morrison earned the same honors in the Associated Press 2023 Preseason All-American teams, which the AP announced Monday.
Alt made the first team at offensive tackle alongside Penn State senior OT Olu Fashanu and just over Duke senior Graham Barton and Alabama junior JC Latham.
“Alt was the No. 2 tackle, according to Pro Football Focus, with a pass blocking grade of 91.4,” The Sporting News writer Bill Bender wrote. “He allowed just six quarterback hurries and no sacks, and he’s become the latest star on the offensive line that has produced Consensus All-Americans Ronnie Stanley, Quenton Nelson, Mike McGlinchey and Liam Eichenberg in the last 10 seasons. Alt will get big-stage games against Ohio State, USC and Clemson as he aims for the Outland Trophy.”
Iowa junior cornerback Cooper DeJean joined Morrison on the second team. Alabama junior Kool-Aid McKinstry and Penn State junior Kalen King made up the first-team corners.
Nine 2023 Irish opponents were named first-team Sporting News Preseason All-Americans: USC junior quarterback Caleb Williams, Ohio State junior receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka, Clemson junior running back Will Shipley (listed by The Sporting News as an “athlete), Ohio State junior defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau, Ohio State graduate linebacker Tommy Eichenberg, Clemson junior linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr., USC junior safety Calen Bullock and Stanford senior kicker Joshua Karty.
Three more made the second team: Barton, USC junior receiver Dorian Singer and Ohio Statue junior guard Donovan Jackson.

Quote of the day
“[We meet] a lot. You have to. Along with [Notre Dame quarterbacks coach] Gino [Guidugli], those guys— just because his eyes, his ears, all of us together, we got to be thinking the same way. If not, we have issues. There are times, and I’ve done it before in my career, whenever you really like [a play call], but if he just doesn’t feel it at the quarterback position, there is no room for it. You just can’t [call it]. We believe there is a great deal of trust in him.”
