No. 1 overall prospect, Five-Star Plus+ receiver Jeremiah Smith has pair of Miami fall visits on his radar

No. 1 overall prospect, Five-Star Plus+ receiver Jeremiah Smith has pair of Miami fall visits on his radar

Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna Five-Star Plus+ receiver Jeremiah Smith, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting class according to the On3 Industry Rankings, may be committed to Ohio State, but the 6-foot-3, 200-pound wideout is still planning to make a pair of trips to Miami this fall.

Smith told CaneSport he will likely attend the Hurricanes’ Sept. 9 game against No. 23 Texas A&M at Hard Rock Stadium as well as Miami’s Oct. 21 home game against No. 9 Clemson, the Canes’ two biggest home games of the 2023 season. He also plans on attending this year’s Miami-Florida State game in Tallahassee, although he’ll be in attendance as a Seminole recruit.

Miami, Florida State and Florida are among the programs still aggressively pushing to flip Smith from Ohio State, where he has been committed since December 2022. He took official visits to Miami, Florida and Ohio State this summer and took two unofficial trips to Florida State.

“Those two (Miami games), I’ll probably go to them,” Smith said. “Florida, I don’t have a game (picked out) yet. I’ll probably go to Florida State when they play Miami, and then Ohio State.”

Geno Smith playing role in Jeremiah’s recruitment

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith, Jeremiah’s older cousin, was paired with Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson during the duo’s time at West Virginia and experienced Dawson’s coaching firsthand. Geno heavily complimented Dawson, per Jeremiah, telling him that he understands how to get the ball to his playmakers.

Jeremiah says he respects Dawson’s success as a play caller.

“It feels like with coach Dawson they’re going to have a better season than they had last year,” Jeremiah said. “Seeing what he did at Houston and then what he did with (Geno) at West Virginia. Coach (Kevin Beard), he’s gonna get the receivers right this season. I’m seeing improvement for sure. I just feel like Miami will be back this year for sure. … I know the offense is going to do well this year.”

Jeremiah and his father, Christopher, have repeatedly said Miami’s staff has recruited them as well as they could, but the family wants to see the Hurricanes back up their recruiting talk with offensive improvement this season. Jeremiah said he’s not looking for a specific point threshold or season stat averages, but when he knows, he’ll know. Christopher previously said they plan to keep their eyes on the Hurricanes this season.

Miami’s staff, led by head coach Mario Cristobal, still texts Jeremiah “every day.” He said he hears from “every coach on Miami’s staff” just as he has the previous eight months.

CaneSport’s Take

Smith has taken an increasingly popular position among Miami targets committed elsewhere: Win big, and the Hurricanes will earn even more serious attention from the country’s No. 1 overall prospect. Miami remains in a show-me-don’t-tell-me position with Smith, who has never closed the door on the Canes, but it’s clear these next four months of Miami football will determine their chances with Smith.
