SMU’s Fall Camp Freshmen Report: Week 3

SMU’s Fall Camp Freshmen Report: Week 3

After a week away, we pick back up on SMU Football’s Freshmen Report for fall camp. Here’s the latest buzz on some of the true freshmen as camp winds down.

LB Alex Kilgore: The Mustangs have a future star in Kilgore, who could very well see early snaps this fall. He enrolled in January and since then has impressed with how he’s gone about his business on and off the field. Kilgore is the middle linebacker of the future for SMU and in fall camp, he’s made plays when he’s had opportunities.

OL Alex Woods: Woods is intriguing for multiple reasons. He could be a center or guard, but for this year, he could be the backup right guard. He could also end up being a backup center. He’s already college ready from a size perspective. The Sunshine State addition is learning how Garin Justice wants things done still, but he’s got the tools to be a multi-year starter at SMU after Justin Osborne departs.

TE Tripp Riordan: When Riordan got to the Hilltop, his size was welcomed while his athleticism surprised even the coaches. He’s been getting some more reps in the back half of camp and has shown he’s a capable pass catcher. Like many freshmen, he’s still learning the type of consistency the coaching staff wants overall. The bad news for Riordan is that Nolan Matthews-Harris having a strong camp might slow his opportunities a bit more than we might’ve thought earlier this summer. Either way, he’ll have a chance to break through on special teams. If he doesn’t, a redshirt might not be a bad thing for him to add strength.

LB Brandon Miyazono: Miyazono came in this summer and was ready to go physically. The former Frisco (Tex.) standout showed some physicality in fall camp that gives some good indications he’ll be able to handle the jump to college football. Miyazono needs to show more of his coverage skills, but he hasn’t been given many opportunities just yet. SMU inked a pair of linebackers from the high school ranks and both have shown enough to feel good about their long-term outlook.

DL Daemian Wimberly: When SMU landed Wimberly out of the Austin area, they got one of the most athletic defensive linemen in the state. Wimberly has the athleticism schools covet, but it’s the consistency that needs to come through. While Wimberly had a productive senior season, there were times where he didn’t show enough to truly dominate games start to finish. Calvin Thibodeaux’ job is to get Wimberly to turn it on. In fall camp, he was up and down a bit.

DL Kevin Allen: Allen could garner a few snaps a game along the interior of SMU’s defensive line. The Everman (Tex.) product has the size to contribute right away. Will he be able to break through a group that has plenty of veterans is the hardest part. Allen has shown plenty of promise to be a true plug in the middle, but his role this year will likely be a small one. Allen’s impressed athletically more than the staff even thought, but he might just have to redshirt this year before breaking out in Year 2.
