Intel and Eval: The latest on 4-star Auburn QB target Deuce Knight
Welcome to the recruiting edition of the 3-2-1. In this style, Auburn Live will combine intel and analysis on some of Auburn’s biggest targets.
There will be three pieces of intel or information on that player’s recruitment, two areas in which that recruit excels on the field and on film, and one area in which that recruit can improve his game.
The latest intel and evaluation on 4-star Auburn quarterback target Deuce Knight from Nashville (Tenn.) Lipscomb Academy.
Three pieces of intel
— Interestingly, even though Knight now plays his high school football in Tennessee, the Mississippi connection is playing a factor here. Hugh Freeze grew up in a very similar area to where Knight is from (George County, Mississippi) and the two relate over that.
— Knight’s favorite player of all time is Cam Newton, he says. Freeze has compared him to former Liberty, and Auburn, quarterback Malik Willis. Knight sees some similarities to Robby Ashford. Bottom line, Knight sees a perfect fit with the offense that Freeze and Philip Montgomery have told him they will run at Auburn.
— Based on our latest intel, Auburn may be trending as the team to beat with Knight. It is not clear enough to make a prediction just yet, but the Tigers are becoming the hot team in this recruitment. Why? No. 1, Knight has become very intrigued with Auburn and the plan from Freeze and Montgomery. No. 2, Auburn is searching for a quarterback in 2025. While it does not want to rush, if Knight decides he is ready to jump, it seems likely Auburn would not say no.
Two strengths
— Knight has a rifle and he is a lefty. He can beam it into tight windows and knows when to put the heat on the ball. He has nice touch on his throws and looks pretty good when standing in the pocket even though he is a dual-threat guy.
— Knight’s arm is very good, but his running ability seems to be his calling card. He compared himself to Malik Willis, which seems to be pretty good. He can run like some of the better dual threat quarterbacks out there.
One area for improvement
— Without knowing all of the context with his game as a quarterback (highlights are not a great way to analyze a quarterback) it seems that Knight can be somewhat erratic in the pocket at times. Sometimes that turns into big plays, but it won’t be quite as easy on the next level. Settling in and standing in the pocket more consistently would take his game to another level, and he is already very good.
