5-star DJ Pickett ‘real connected’ with Will Harris ahead of Florida return
ZEPHYRHILLS, FL. — During the spring, Gators Online first reported that 5-star prospect DJ Pickett was scheduled to visit Florida on August 31. That’s for the season opener against Miami.
At the time, the LSU commit said it was an official visit, while weeks later On3 reported it was switched to an unofficial visit. As of Thursday, those exact details are still being worked out.
One thing is for certain though: On3’s No. 1-ranked cornerback still plans to visit Florida on that date.
“Yeah, I’m going,” Pickett told Gators Online before practice on Thursday. “It’s really what everybody is saying. They’re saying they are going to recruit me until the end and see how things go. The main thing they say is how they’re going to recruit me until the end.”
Florida is pushing the right buttons with DJ Pickett
Among those pursuing Pickett on behalf of the Florida Gators are Billy Napier and secondary coach Will Harris. Those conversations are taking place roughly three times a week.
As expected though, the majority of Pickett’s communication with Florida runs through Harris.
“Just in general, I’m big on loyalty and keeping things straightforward with me. Coach Harris has done that pretty much the whole way,” said Pickett. “That’s a big part of why I’m real connected with coach Harris.”
Letting the on-field play speak for itself
It’s no secret the Gators have a difficult slate ahead of them, as many outlets believe they have the toughest schedule in college football.
That includes road matchups against Texas, Florida State and Tennessee, as well as Georgia in Jacksonville.
As it pertains to Pickett’s recruitment, how important is Florida’s on-field success in 2024?
“I mean, winning is a big (deal) and with Miami too. I feel like if those two teams win, they will keep a lot of kids in Florida and do big things. All they have to do is pretty much win,” Pickett said.
“Florida already has the conference; they’re in the SEC, so all they got to do is just win and take care of business.”
Several visits will take place during the fall
Other than Florida in week one, Pickett does not have any visits scheduled right now.
However, that doesn’t mean he will not be busy. It’s just about finding ideal dates and making sure it aligns with his senior campaign at Zephyrhills. That is priority No. `1.
“I might go to Miami games just to show my cousin (Booker Pickett) support. If anything happens, it happens, but I’m not looking to go anywhere else,” said Pickett. “Other than that, I’ll mainly be going to LSU games and probably Miami too.”
Stay tuned to Gators Online.
