4-star LB Gavin Nix readies for Miami official visit after dropping top 6: “In the next few years The U will be back”

IMG Academy four-star linebacker Gavin Nix included Miami in his top six schools Sunday. Five days later, the No. 151 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking is ready for his official visit to Coral Gables.

Miami remains in the mix for Nix along with Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida, Florida State and Stanford, the blue-chip prospect told CaneSport. He’ll visit Miami this weekend, Oregon next weekend and Florida State the weekend of June 21, which he said are the only three schools he plans to official visit this summer. Miami’s staff visited his school earlier this spring to check up on the No. 17 linebacker in the cycle and No. 20 prospect in the state of Florida, and the Hurricanes have remained high on his radar.

Now, two months after his last trip to Miami, he’s ready for his OV.

“The main thing is just to see the last few things I haven’t seen as far as a few things in my major, getting to sit down and talk with my professors,” Nix said. “As far as football, I’ve already seen the ins and outs and things of that nature. So it’s really about getting down to the meats and potatoes and just seeing the realistic side of things and knocking out a few questions I have.”

Nix said his top six schools will be the final schools he seriously considers before he makes a decision, and he’ll pay close attention on the three schools he’ll take official visits to this month.

“The main thing that’ll get me, for what I value, is if I can go somewhere where I can trust that I’ll be developed and trust I can be under a staff that can develop guys at a very high level,” Nix said. “Because at the end of the day I still have dreams of getting to the NFL, so that’s keeping the main thing the main thing. And then what an institution can do for me, as far as when I’m in college and then life after football. What opportunities do they provide for their players? Because football can go any day.”

Nix plans to visit Miami with his mother, father and older brother, and feels the relationships he’s built with the Hurricanes’ staff have kept Miami a top contender. He’s remained close with linebackers coach Derek Nicholson and said their relationship is “deeper than just recruiting” and that he can talk to him for extended periods of time about things beyond football.

He also has faith in where Miami is heading under head coach Mario Cristobal.

“I really think the trajectory coach Cristobal has the team on, I think in the next few years The U will be back,” Nix said. “And I know it would be a great thing to be a part of.”

CaneSport’s Take

Miami has helped its chances for Nix each time they’ve hosted the four-star linebacker, and they should be able to do the same this weekend. Miami should have a very good chance here.
