2025 four-star Cortez Thomas sets pair of SEC summer official visits

Holmes County Central High School’s Cortez Thomas has grown familiar with Mississippi State’s campus over the past year or so. Earlier this month the 2025 cornerback and On3 composite four-star prospect was back in Starkville for another look at the program.

This time Thomas got more insight into State’s spring practice preparations and got to see the new staff in action on the practice fields. Thomas is rated as the nation’s No. 29 cornerback and the state’s No. 9 prospect by On3 composite rankings.

“It was pretty good,” Thomas recalled. “I got to walk through the facilities, talk to the coaches and sit in on the position meetings. That part was good, too. I have not been there for awhile so it felt good to be back.”

During those practice drills, Thomas kept a close eye on State’s secondary. That also included getting a good view of how cornerbacks coach Corey Bell teaches his guys in the defensive backfield.

“I got to see a lot at practice,” added the 6-foot and 170-pound Thomas. “I saw the way Coach Bell was coaching. It was very detailed and very strategic. They went through a lot of different drills and he had them do a lot of different things.”

After building close bonds with State’s previous staff, Thomas has started that process over with Bell and other new members of the Bulldogs’ staff. He noted of the relationship-building process with Bell and their recent conversation during that visit.

“Coach Bell was talking to me about me finding my spot in their program,” Thomas said. “He was giving me advice on being recruited. Our relationship is coming along and it is going good lately.”

Up next, Thomas does not have any immediate plans for other unofficial visits. However, he has set up a pair of official visits in June and that includes a return to Mississippi State.

“I am not sure where I am going next,” noted Thomas. “But I do have some summer official visits set up. I am going to Mississippi State on June 21st for an official. I also have an official set for Kentucky on June 16th.”

Looking further down the road, Thomas is keeping an open mind with favorites and has yet to publicly release any list of favorites. But his plans are to enter his senior season at Holmes County Central with his college decision already made.

“Right now I am thinking about making my decision either late June or the beginning of August,” mentioned Thomas. “That way I can just focus on my senior season. I am just looking at all of the schools that have offered me and are recruiting me.”
