2-Minute Drill: Josh Heupel, Vols, finishing off prep for Austin Peay week

The Tennessee football team is set to open Neylan Stadium for the first time this season with a 5 o’clock eastern time matchup against Austin Peay – the game will be streamed on ESPN+ and the SEC Network+. On Thursday, Vols head coach Josh Heupel met with the media a final time prior to kickoff.

Wednesday on the SEC Teleconference, Heupel was asked about some injuries. First, the coach was asked about linebacker Keenan Pili as Volquest reported that he will miss multiple weeks with an upper-body injury.

“We weren’t sure early in the week the severity of the injury,” Heupel said during appearance. “He will not be available this week. He’ll miss a couple weeks here…I don’t believe it’s season ending at this point. We’ll see how he continues to heal up in the coming days and weeks.”

The night before on Vol Calls, a Vol Network statewide radio show, Heupel was then asked about center Cooper Mays, who has been sidelined for the past month following a minor procedure. It sounds as if the three-year starter will be rejoining the lineup sooner rather than later.

“Cooper, he’s been with us on the field” Heupel said. “We will not play him in this one (against Austin Peay). That’s just in preparation for the following week, make sure that he’s 100 percent.”
